I've been experiencing a rearend whine since about 12k, and I have 22 on it now. Dealer has been contacted multiple times. They say they know about and understand the noise, but DC does not have a fix for trucks with a standard, the fix is only for those with automatics. What I would like to know is WHAT the difference between the two is, and why the same fix from the automatic trucks cannot be applied to mine? My warranty period is coming up, and after that if something decides to buy the farm I only have my dealers word that they will fix it, I'd kind of like for it to be done and not worry about it.

I would get what they told you in writing before your warranty runs out.

Good advice. I would only add that you should maybe get that in writing from a couple of different dealers so that you have documentation from multiple dealers.

Your dealer is full of male cow excrement. Had the whine from day 1 & notified dealer. Kept using it until 50k & took it in for a rebuild under warranty. Mechanic had alot of trouble getting it just right but has been fine since

Once your warranty is over, they are free of responsibility. Get your complaint documented repeatedly. I have a friend who went through the internet with these NY lemon law lawyers at no cost to him, GM had to listen and bought back his Blazer because they could not get rid of a squeak / rattle after 3 attempts. The same guy got a free 100K warranty on another GM truck because of end of warranty repair concerns. He used the BBB arbitration line on the internet. Funny thing is DC is one of the few automakers that does not participate ?? Get others that have experience involved or I don't think you'll get anything but aggravation.

It just seems funny to me, that my truck is an 03, and we have 05 trucks out now, 06's soon, and they do not have a fix for it. I've got a few service receipts with the "Owner reports blah blah" on them, and asked for them to mail me 2 other copies. The one TSB I seen that I believe was for the rearend whine, the fix was something like changing the yokes on the rear? I cant remember. I just dont understand why the same fix cannot be applied to my truck. Doesn't make any sense.

Wow someone at the dealer must be reading the TDR! Got a phone call earlier this morning after I made that post and there is a ring and pinon there waiting to be installed. Looks like I'll drop it off monday, hopefully it'll cure it.

If this dealer won't do it, go to another one. Complain and document out the ... . Then you can get it bought back under lemon law if it comes to that.

Hope the fix works for you. So far, I have no problem with it on mine.

New ring and pinion cured mine so far. Stored for the winter but towing big Bertha down south in the spring. That will tell the story. Good luck with your new ring and pinion. At least they listened to you... . or the TDR. The main thing is they are fixing it. By the way, after discussion with the dealer tech that did the job, I am running Redline 75W140 in it.

When I originally took it in the first time, I was told there was a TSB and that they were going to change the lube and a few seals, and that should cure it. It had been in 3 times since then for it and nothing was done. I sure hope it cures it, Its bad enough to hear it over the radio even if its cranked.

The tsb is 03-004-04 and is for auto trans trucks only.

I had mine back to the dealer for the whine [65 mph] . They agreed the r/p gear needed to be changed but Dodge says no that changin' the r/p gear doesn't stop the whine. Makes my ears ring.

Bill, I'm just as mystified as you as why they can't fix the whine in our trucks with stick shifts. After three failed tries by dealer, in Oklahoma, to fix prob I can start lemon law. Hope I can find one that doesn't make my ears ring anymore... ... ... JIM

I'm actually suprised there is this many people that have or had the problem. I had heard about the rear end whine some, but was expecting quite as many. I will keep you guys informed with my experience.

I have had a rear fail on my 2004. But it was the dip**** tech at Dodge's fault. Took it in with 8000 miles for the whine, they diagnosed pinion bearing bad, replaced pinion bearing. 200 miles later coming down Poudre canyon with 38ft 5th wheel, rear end locked up. Towed it too Dodge told them I would accept nothing less than a new housing and all internals. Got whole new rear end installed now 2000 miles later whine is back. Any help with what I can do would be greatly appreciated. I have read in TDR magazine that the whine is normal don't worry about it, but thats just a little hard to stomach on a $35,000 pickup.

Sorry forgot to add, that the dealer Champion Dodge in Greeley would not open the rear end up, to see what failed, or should I say what there tech forgot to tighten. That also had me pretty po'd.

Yea,Mine is back right now for the second time!First time it had chunks so big I could not get the drain plug back in. Dealer rebuilt it and it lasted 7000 miles! This time it is getting a whole new rear disc to disc!Just wished they had not switched to the AAM axle as I think they are junk! Never had any problems out of the Dana.

I wonder when the dealers will have a fix for all the whiners?

Has anyone seen one of these rearends fail?

Well guys I had to leave it overnight today, go pick it up tomorrow afternoon and see what I've got. I'll keep you informed. Sure hope this fixes it.

Edit: One other thing, I know the GM's are using the American axles. I haven't heard of this problem with any of them. What are the differences? Maybe somewheres in there is where the fault lies.

Got it back this afternoon, whine is gone! I just hope it stays gone. I didn't get the chance to ask anyone about the differences inbetween the auto and standards, but those of you who have a whine and haven't got it fixed I'd reccomend a ring and pinon replacement. Did the trick for me.

Well mines still there and guess what No new housing! The ring gear would move about a 1/2inch when you would rock the drive shaft back and forth. The thing was full of metal again and the ring and pinion and bearings were gone again. Another tech was standing there and looked at it and said there was to much metal for the amount of wear and said the guy must have not cleaned it out right. Seems the"Tech"that did the work likes to think it is OK to reassemble it without cleaning it out!Went back today to inspect the wheel bearings and Lo and behold the thing is back together!Started looking at it and guess what again he did not clean it out!Went and got the manager again and made them take the rotors off, and the oil in them was full of metal. The bearings were shot along with the races. Their way of cleaning it out was going to be by filling it with oil and driving it around and draining it out and refilling it and doing it again. Smart thought lets just run the crap through it again and tear up the new parts. Told them to clean everything and reassemble it then fill and flush it. Man if I did work like this at work I'd be lookin for a new job! With just 10,000 miles left on the warranty I'm almost sure they were just trying to get it by till it ran out. Think I'll be callin DC tomorow and let them know how there dealers are doing warranty work. If they had replaced the ring & pinion the first time at 1500 miles this would not be happening,or if they had cleaned it right maybe it would be good now.
AGGGG!!! Done ranting now!
