My rear differential is broken-the shaft holding the gears in place has sheared in half and the resulting loose metal has pretty much destroyed everything else. Took out the driveshaft and used the truck in front wheel drive, now I have caused a loud missing tooth sound from the front end.
Have found a used 1-ton,dual wheel, same ratio. Mine is single wheel W250. Question: Can I convert the dually to single wheel without much trouble?
How did I break such a robust rear-end you ask? Plowing snow for 8 years, sometimes for 3-4 days straight thru with two drivers, constantly in four-wheel drive. Pushing snow uphill and around corners you would hit a spot of dry road. Under nearly full power you can imagine the strain between the front and rear wheels. I would replace front universals every 2 years! I'm not complaining, the truck has outlasted every other vehicle plus even with the broken shaft it has kept on going! I might add that this truck has paid for itself and then some.
