This has probably been covered before but can't find it. Getting ready to change oil in rear end for first time. 1999 2500 5 speed with Dana 80 Hyb. Is oil 80-90W hypoid? Also there are a dozen different RTV sealants. What type to use?

Paul,when you change your differential gear lube,dont't forget to put in the modifier oil ,if you have an anti-spin rear end.
I also would recommend putting in synthetic oil now.

There have been several threads on the lube topic, such as the "Mag Hytec on the Dana 70" in the Product forum. I am using LE 607 from Mag Hytec along with their cover for my Dana 80.

Hi Paul!

DC fills it's HD 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks with a synthetic 75W-90 in the rear axle, but urges you to use a synthetic 75W-140 in the owners manual if you are towing.

All Ford and Chevies 3/4 and larger pickups and SUV rear ends are factory filled with a synthetic 75W-140. For them this is a REQUIRMENT not a recommendation.

Eaton, Rockwell, and Spicer have been factory filling all their drive trains, in class 8 trucks, with a synthetic for over 10 years. If I'm not mistaken, the only time they recommend anything heavier than a 75W-90 is for off highway use.

In their warranties,components lubed with a petroleam are covered for 500,000 mi with a 50,000 oil drain interval. With an approved synthetic, the drain interval goes to 250,000 and the warranty is 750,000.

Most of the big three charge from $15. 00 to $20. 00 per qt for a synthetic 75W-90 and $25. 00 to $30. 00 per qt for a 75W-140. Most oil companies make a synthetic 75W-90 and sell it for between $6. 00 and $12. 00 a qt. I KNOW for a fact the oils from AMSOIL, Mobil and Redline are also better quality than the factory oils. The LE products may very well be also, but I have never seen a spec sheet on them and have never met anyone who has used it, so I am uncomfortable recommending them. Few companies make a synthetic 75W-140, it is a very small market item, so it is harder to find. The only one I know of for sure is AMSOIL and it retails for $11. 85 per Qt.

I hope this dosen't just confuse you more.

Our techs just went to a rear end course and DC told them to use ultra grey loctite. As for fluid we have been recomending 80w90 or 75-140 for towing both in synthetic.

Blair is correct, Dodge sells the Loctite gray RTV. However, if you are not using a Mag-Hytec differential cover (O-ring seal), my preference is to use a cover gasket with Loctite 515 (Gasket Eliminator) covering both faces of the gasket prior to installation. I HAVE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO LEAKS, WEEPS, DRIPS ETC. in over 10 years of using this method. When I changed the gear lube in the front differential several months ago, I purchased a gasket from NAPA to fit my Dana 60 (as NO gaskets are used for either front or rear OE differential covers... just RTV), using the Loctite 515 on both gasket surfaces prior to installing my trick, modified Dana/Dynatrac/Scribner Dana 60 cover.
