Okay decided to wash the truck yesteday as it was a beautiful day, glad i did, left rear hub leaking, make a long story short, thats the side that got a new seal and new axle nut. . Hub is loose, pulled wheel and axle, Push in on hub and have some movement, going to get axle socket for nut this morning to tighten up, so far i don't think there was enough play to mess up the bearing, might have messed up the seal im not sure, going to tighten axle nut to where hub has no movement and put back together and see if it leaks anymore. To the best of my eyes no damage to anything just alittle hub movement, enought to cause leak, could have been that way after bringing from the shop, as i noticed oil on the inside but brushed it off as oil from where it has gotten on their the day of the work. .

We will see... .

If the mechanic installed a new seal, it is possible that the garter spring was dislodged when driving the seal in place. That happened to me once. It will never quit leaking if that is what happened. You will have to remove the hub to get this corrected. It is a very agravating chore but the spring can be reinstalled with the seal in place. Don't over torque the axle nut. There needs to be a tad of clearance to compensate for heat build up. Of course there ISN"T supposed to be play as you mention.

Good luck. Hope that just snugging does the job.

Okay it was the nut that needed some tightening up, won't know until later if its going to leak again, but no hug play and the hug spins very freely with no problems, i do think that dam E brake cable has come loose in that side again, oh well that is the lest of my worries.

If you had play in the hub. Most likely it wiped the seal out. Seals are not made to handle movement in that fashion.

You also have a good coating of 75/90W gear lub on the brake shoes also.

picked up another seal when i took the axle nut socket back, can't tell if its has leaked any at all since going to town and back, doesn't appear to be but appearing and whats acutally taking place are totally different, im going to check the rear end fluid level as i had not lost a great amount, just enough to cover the inside of my rim and some of the outside of the hub, there was not one ounce of fluid leaking between hub and backing plate where the shoes attach, to me it appeared to be coming from around a stud on the lower half but then again sometimes leaks will fool a person, i am going to take it step by step as the weather is turning nasty here and i did not want to have it all apart, hub etc, and them calling for nearly a foot of snow...

well just checked the truck and so far no leaking of any kind thats after a 25 min trip to town and back earlier to drop off that axle nut socket... .

I did have a question i found the axle nut sockets on the snap on site, i believe its a 6 point, and they have the 2 9/16 size the stock# 1928A Can anyone confirm, it sure looks exactly like the one i borrowed

Theres suppose to be . 001 to . 010 end play on the hub. If you take all the end play out you don't know if you have Pre-Loaded the bearings or not. Do Not Pre-Load the bearings they will not last. Yes that socket is the right one but you can get one cheaper else where. NAPA has them I got one from Harbor Freight for $5. 00 on sale.
