 Well changed my valve cover gaskets and now the rear main is leaking. Is it a ***** to change? I called cummins and they quoted me 1500. 00 to change it. Is that about right? Wish the rear main was as easy as the v-covers(Cummins gaskets) Thanks guys! :-laf Oh by the way how is pastor bob doing?

For $1500, they better at least kiss you for it. Granted, you have to drop the transmission, but that is still outrageous. I was thinking more along the lines of $350-500 for just the rear seal. Also have them replace the cam plug while they have it all together.

Or you could do it yourself. I'm not sure what the kit costs, but the numbers are in the FAQ section. The cam plug is behind the flywheel adaptor (or I should say in front- toward the front of the engine- of it; depends on how correct and proper you want to be. )

I agree, that is a bit strong. There is a new seal which requires an installation tool but the original is available. There was a recent post on the rear seal. BGilbet I think. Read that.

I did my rear main seal while the adapter plate and flex plate was being replaced ( see " flex-plate woes" It is prety easy ... if you have the special tool that is needed ;).

It took all of 5 minutes, a new seal and gasket for the seal carrier. Cummins supplies a new type of rear replacement seal that requires a special tool to install it to the proper depth and center the carrier at the same time. But 1500 !! Man ... I'll do it for that lol!

Hey J, where Upstate are you? I have access to the alleged "special" tool and might get you a deal on the seal. I got the new updated one for mine for about $50. I would never put in the old style one, I've done 2 and they were both loose in the bore. The new one has barbed outer edges to hold it in place. $1500 seems like alot to me, I agree with Daniel on price. But a 4x4 in the rust belt, they could be covering their a** in case they run into a problem. If every thing comes apart ok, you can do it in a weekend. I had my '89 4x4 apart in 2 1/2 to 3 hours by myself.

I've had to get new rear seals for both of mine -- I paid $350 for my 4x4 and $200 for the D350.

It was worth not wrestling with the transfer case on the W350!

:)
