Rear Main Seal???

Well boys I'm a little behind the learning curve here. While repairing my bungled up getrag rebearing from this summer, I pulled the bellhousing, clutch and flywheel. This was the first time the flywheel has ever been off my truck, and I figured I'd replace the rear main seal. I sucessfully pulled the old seal, then opened up my new seal kit. It came with a lip seal(duh), a plastic ring(I know what that is too), and a metal ring??? I have the seal driven into the adapter, over the crank, and thats ok. I actually used the steel ring to drive in the seal. Now, the hole in the middle of the steel ring is not large enough to slip over the crank. What is this steel ring for? Is it the infamos "installer" I hear about? Or is this some updated piece thats supposed to go in there too?

When I did my rear main seal the seal was actually 2 parts, a steel sleeve and a lip seal. I had to buy a special tool to properly install both on the crank while the seal adapter was loose. I sold the tool to 1stgen after I compleated mine. The two part seal works like this, the steel sleeve is to repair any wear groove on the end of the crank and the teflon seal works with the new steel sleeve. P. S. Do not try and put the sleeve on with out the tool as it is precisely made to fit exactly, if it is not installed absolutely straight it WILL crack. Practical expierance talking now :{ 60. 00 for another seal. As I wnderstand it Cummings is now useing this type of seal exclusevely. I am not positive about this. Also the tool placeses everything at the proper depth to properly position the seal carrier for tightening.
 
Mine did not come with a sleeve for the crank. I think you are talking abour a "speedy sleeve" type item? I actually have this steel ring that is the outer diameter of the seal, and the inner diameter is just slightly smaller then the crank. It almost looks like a dirt gaurd. Its stamped out of steel.



I do know what you are talking about on the sleeve that needs to be specially installed on the crank, Caterpillar uses these in certain applications.

Michael, Michael, Michael. The ring you are referring to is the depth tool/guide. WHen you bottom out the tool, the seal is at the proper and (hopefully) even depth. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting the seal a hair off of plum, and it will leak.

Thats what I figured but I wanted to make sure. You don't know how many times I've gotten wrong parts in my job, or ordered a replacement part and received parts that were all together different due to a "running change" or "part improvement". I was just checking... ... thank you.

If you got the old style metal type seal, you got the crappy one! The ones I put in my trucks were plastic, and barbed on the outside. Both my '92 and the '89 I had, the metal seal was loose in the holder. On the '89, I hooked it with my fingernail, and pulled it out! The new seal grabs both the crank, and the housing, and rotates in itself. I know there is a name for this, but darned if I remember! If you want one of these, let me know. ;)
 
I do have the tool and Cummins IS using the wedding band seal. The old style is discontinued. The new one is teflon and IS NOT lubed with the installation as are the early types. I have not installed a new type seal but had several conversations with Mark during his ordeal.



The seal that runs in 'itself' is call a mechanics seal if it is on a wheel seal.



I don't have any advise that you could be certain of.

Shoot no! It's awesome! Our friend in MO pm'ed me for the #. I told him what I paid for it, I'm sure I'll hear from him! ;) Tomorrow I'll check the price, I'm sure it went up, it's been 2 years.

Well of course not, it won't leak until after I get all the drivetrain back to gether, and drive it a little. It sure won't leak with just the clutch and bellhousing on... ... .

Correction on my previous post! :rolleyes: I checked the seals today, with the number I put in the '92. The one I put in has the speedy sleeve, the other # is the regular seal. When I installed mine, I used the tool, for ease of assembly. I didn't realize it had the sleeve. My bad! The regular seal does have 3 or 4 barbs on the steel seal. It is about 1/4 the price of the other.

I will get the seal part #'s, and post them here, tomorrow! :)
