Brand new (2001) Ram 2500 Quad cab 4x4 with Cummins 5. 9HO and 6 speed manual.

Developed rear main seal leak within first 200 miles! Has anyone else had this problem. It's at the dealership now for three days, and I'm wondering if I should leave it there!

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE IT!

My ETH/DEE is only 3 months old. I TRIED to break my engine (see my post: stock egt-what have I done) and couldn't! Hope with all my TDR heart it's just a bum seal or seal-install and that's the end of your troubles!

Ian.

I notice a single drop apparently from the rear seal area when I change the oil. No spots on the floor, so it must be an extremely minor leak. First appeared around 10,000 miles. I have 15,000 now. Decided not to take any action at this point.

I noticed mine has a slow leak, enough for a thin coating of oil in that region of the oil pan, but not near enough to actually drip on the floor. Not going to worry about it, closing in on 50,000 miles. IMO most engines eventually start leaking a little oil and to have a totally dry, non-oily diesel engine for hundreds of thousands of miles is not realistic.

are you sure its not a valve cover gasket leak , thath what mine was dealer replased the vale cover gasket driped stop under warenty

my truck is a 3500 2wd ho/eth/dee

Been there. done that and its ugly!

My '96 rear main went out at ~23K miles.

It took 5 trips into the 5* dealer before

he admitted that it was a rear main.

Another 2 trips to fix it (or so they

said).

The straw came when I did an oil change

3K miles later and found that most (if

not all) of the bell housing bolts were

loose. I mean the kind that you could

spin a couple of turns by your fingers.

Gee they seem surprized when I brought my

'98 back and told them all the things they

left loose after supposely replacing the

trans input shaft seal. Which they had

to pull the trans again 2 weeks later

after it started leaking again.

Now that it is out of the 3year 36K mile

warrenty I plan to do self maintainence

with a few excepts. Those I plan on taking

to Cummins West.

my 01 seal leaked for a while when i first got it. an old diesel mechanic buddy of mine told me to give it a chance for everything to seat in properly. dripped for about two weeks and never another sign leaking. also the blow-by bottle was full and made a mess accross the bottom of the engine

Yeah, I guess something is starting on mine too. I just noticed leaking on the right rear of the oil pan, but not enough to drop on the garage floor yet. It's hard to see if it's the pan gasket, seal retainer gasket, or the rear main. Whatever. I got bigger problems with loose steering. I'll hit up the dealer soon, might as well make it an all-in-one visit for the other stuff. Got about 9000 miles on it now and never noticed a leak before now.
