A freind of mine has a 1st gen Dodge with a Cummings. His rear main engine seal leaks. How much work is involved in changing this seal? What exactly is involved?

I've researched it because I'm about to do it. Pull driveshaft, disconnect transmission linkage, cooling lines, speedo cable. Remove transmission. Remove Torque convertor. Drill two holes in seal, pull seal with slide hammer. Clean sealing surfaces. Check crank surface for grooves. If grooved, get and install sleeve from Cummins. Install seal DRY. Re assemble everything. Relax.

I have e-mailed you a scan of the service manual page. This is considered an in-chassis repair. The text with the picture is the important part. There must be NO oil on the crankshaft or seal, or else it will leak!

Dennis,

Me too on the scan page via email, I have a post on this a couple of days ago under New Rig... ...

Question about the sleeve, is it a heat shrink fit on the crank or just Locktite????

Any advice welcome!!
