Hah... just bringing this up from the dead...



I haven't even thought about the rear pinion seal since I was having what appears to be injector issues... actually forgot about it. Decided to check last weekend, and the leak has stopped... maybe from cold weather? I don't know.



I thought about the design of that seal and how it was installed. The seal has three lips on it... two are oil seals close together and the third is a dust seal which is pretty far away from the oil seals (pretty big gap between them). The seal was installed with gear oil running out of the pinion (he didn't drain it, to save me $$ on the nine quarts of RP 85w140). This leads me to believe that possibly the cavity between the oil seal lips and the dust seal lip was filled with gear oil, and it took a while to leak out... not that the oil seals are leaking at all. It doesn't take much gear oil to look like the Valdez.



So that is my guess at this point... it was excess oil between the sealing surfaces.
