Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) rear seal on dana 80 rear end

I JUST BOUGHT THIS TRUCK 2 1/2 MONTHS AGO. THIRD CTD AND I LOVE THEM!!! THIS TRUCK IS A 97 EXT CAB 2500 5 SP CTD 4 X 4 165K MILES.

I ROATATED MY TIRES 3 WEEKS AGO, I TOOK OFF THE DRUMS TO CHECK MY BACK BRAKES. TO MY SURPRISE THE BRAKE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD GREASE AND BRAKE DUST EVERYWHERE.

I SHOWED MY FRIEND, WE THEN PROCEDED TO REMOVE ALL OF THE COMPONENTS TO THE REAR AXLE AND FOUND WHERE THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD LET THE REAR END GO DRY AND FRIED A BEARING. WE CLEANED ALL OF THIS UP (BRAKE CLEANER) PUT A NEW SEAL IN IT AND I DROVE IT FOR APPROX. 1000 MILES.

TODAY TO MY SURPRISE IT IS STILL LEAKING A LITTLE, SO I DO NOT WANT TO PUT NEW BRAKES ON IT UNTIL I GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED. I KNOW WHERE THE BEARING SITS ON THE SPINDLE IT WAS EATEN UP A LITTLE. SOME PEOPLE TELL ME THAT THE ENTIRE REAR END MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED, I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT A "PAPER-THIN" SLEEVE CAN BE PUT ON IT TO KEEP IT FROM LEAKING!! I NEED HELP, SO ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Talk with a driveline axle repair shop for trucks heavy trucks. They can build that worn area back up. They do it all the time on large truck axles.

I think the thin sleeves, which I believe are called Speedi Sleeves and are available from Chicago Rawhide are only used for sealing surfaces. I don't know why a rough surface on the bearing race would matter because it shouldn't turn on the stub surface anyway.



A speedi sleeve will fix the seal leak and a large truck shop should be able to direct you to someone who will repair/replace the end of the axle stub not the entire axle.
