Rear Axle Seals **Please Help**

I Need everyones Help.

Just took my truck in for oil change.

I was then told my rear seals were leaking, both sides.

This is a problem because this will be the 5 or 6 time they have been done.

What I need is anyone that has had rear seals done Dana 70 or Dana 80 to let me know.

I am looking for

year of truck ?

miles on truck at times of repair ?

number of times repaired ?

If you have work orders and can email that would be great.

-- email address removed --

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Scott, do a search on "speedy sleeves". search all forums.

For what it's worth to you with a 99, I did my 93 at about 140,000 miles. There were grooves worn in the housing on the Dana 70. Had to install speedy sleeves. These are thin sleeves that go over the housing where the seals ride. Gives a fresh surface for the seals to ride on. Any good shop should know what your talking about. Go to a rear end shop, they will know. A stealer will probably try to sell you a new rear end.

I'm with Paccool... at least take it to a different shop. I had the same problem with a work truck and we found out that the first mechanic had installed the seals in backwords:mad:

Try NAPA

I had the same problem with my front transfer case seal. The fellow at NAPA recommended a speedy sleeve, which has since cured the problem. Easy to install and should be under $50 for both sides.

Blue Goo it too!

Scott,

Dana 60 front/70 rear (2500) 99 OC 102,345 miles, did the right rear about 25k ago, nice and dry now. I always smear some blue goo in the axel tube where the seal lands after you drive it home and then once it's in place kinda caulk the outside to the tube. It alwas has worked for me with any rear seal - don't rely on just the red stuff that's on the seal to stop oil from leaking. If the axel itself has a groove worn in it then the sleeves the other guy's are talking about should do the trick - but don'f forget to goo up the seal & the landing area on the tube too.

Hope this helps.

rear seal leakage

Scott

had rear seals done at 100,000kms then at 180,000 because of leakage ,then i did them myself and have no more problems at 426000. Do them yourself and use a speedy sleeve if the shaft is bad enough if not just use some emery cloth on it. The most important part is setting your bearings, too loose and the seals wear out faster, too tight and you wiill wreck your bearings. Tighten just till there no side to side play in the wheel. hope this helps. ;)

Ditto on the sleeves if necessary.

BIG ditto on applying sealer to the outside of the seals. Do it before installing. I use Ultra Black or Ultra Copper for just about everything.
