I have a couple Boston Acoustics’ 2 way speakers that will fit in the rear doors. I have the Infinity system in my truck. I understand the front speakers have an amplifier to drive the rear speakers, so will it be enough to drive the Boston’s? Also, what is the polarity for the speaker wires in the rear? (what color is pos, what color is neg?)
Anybody had experience replacing just the rear speakers? The stereo is good enough for my needs, I just don’t like the “muddy “ sound the rear speaker have.
Thanks everyone.

I replaced mine. Then I put the factory units back in. I can't remember the brand of speakers I put in but I had put a set in my Wrangler and they sounded great so I bought a pair for the truck. They sucked. I recommend going to an audio center and letting them tell you whether or not your speakers will work before you go through the hassle of replacing them like I did.

Does polarity matter on speakers? They will still oscillate at the same frequency, it just will determine whether they go "out" or "in" first but still have the same sound, right? If I am wrong, please clue me in.

As long as the polarity is consistant across all the speakers then it will not matter, however if you get any speaker(s) wired in "out of phase" (polarity reversed) from the others your sound quality will be greatly degraded.

I installed pioneer 3 ways in the back doors of mine along with an amp under the passenger seat, it's much better than stock now. You won't believe how poor the quality of the stock speakers is... even the Infinitys.

I just replaced my speakers and here is the story on the units in a 2001. 5. When you remove the fronts you will see two small amps attached to the face of the unit. The larger amp powers the front speaker while the smaller amp powers the rear. I also believe (but am not sure - manuals at home) that there is a resistor in the rear wiring somewhere. That resistor is the reason for the crappy muffled sound (again I am pretty sure about the resistor). Anyway, my installer remounted the amps low in the door and attached the factory wiring to the appropriate speaker. The fronts sounded much better but the rears were still muffled (like they are from the factory). In a month or so I will tear off the doors and rewire the darn things properly so the rears do not "suck".

Good luck.

Also, this old thread will help. Towards the bottom they get to the crux of the replacement.

Just thought that I would mention that when I had my 98 the rear passenger speaker kept makin all kinds of wierd a^^ racket and the next time it did it a stop light I took my pocket knife and started to jab that speaker in between those plastic pieces. Well needless to say it never worked again, but I never heard that awful racket either! #ad

I have the infiniti system in my 2001 qc and i kept the stock speakers but added a Pioneer head unit, CD Changer and the JL Audio 12' sub that mounts inside the center seat. I put a 300 watt amp under the passenger seat and this setup will blow you out of the truck. I have seen the dual speaker setups that go under the rear seat but you lose the storage area and i have seen the Q-Logic system that fits in between the front and rear seats. This box from JL Audio takes up NO storage space or leg room. You just unbolt and remove the center seat. Take the seat cover off it (Leather or cloth) and put the cover over there speaker box then bolt it in. It is totally invisible and literally impossible to steal. You can still use the center seat although it will not have as much padding. The only thing you do lose is the rear seat cupholder, which is worthless anyhow. Go to www.jlaudio.com and click on "stealth boxes" then search by vehicle type. I paid about $420. 00 plus you will need at least a 300 watt amp to run it. A little expensive but if you like your music loud and like bass, but dont want to lose ANY storage space or leg room, this the way to go. And liek i said, my stock infiniti speakers work great with it.
