time to turn rotors on my 03 (rear)

do i need a special socket, if so what size? (the thin wall kind)

or will a reg. socket due.

and

what fluid does everybody like in the diffs and 5600 that is readily available

thank you

I don't believe any special sockets are required for the rear rotors. They should come off just like the fronts do.

I run Valvoline Synpower 75w-90 in my axles, but I'm getting ready to try some Kendall Elite 75w-90 (supposed to be identical chemistry to the Valvoline).

I use Pennzoil Synchromesh in the transmission, which is equivalent to the stock fluid.

i don't know 100% about the dodge version of the 11. 5", but on the gm version of the 11. 5" you need to pull the axle, pull the nut retainer, nut & outer bearing before the rotor will come off. . [as seen on tv]

socket number listed in the service manual is #8954. . i don't know who makes mopar's listed specialty tools [sk??] so???

Ah ha! The manual implies that DRW trucks require axle removal, but SRW trucks don't. I don't know if that's true or not.

For the DRW trucks it says no special tools are required to remove the axle shafts. Just unbolt the bearing cap and pull out the axle.

i think there is very little diference between the srw and drw 11. 5" brakes. . i hope i am wrong, but i think you need to pull the axles and bearings to get the rotors off the srw

Just did mine a month ago. They come off just like the front do, but mine was all rusted at the hub bore. I could'nt get them separated so I ended up pulling the the hub and rotor assembly out. I use a press to get them separated.

Here is where you can buy the wheel bearing nut socket http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList. aspx?MfrPartNumber=t-72047

I picked up this tool from advance auto. It's a 6 prong socket and it fits perfectly on that wheel bearing nut.

I ended up servicing(re-pack) my rear wheel bearing which the manual recommends anytime you service your rear brakes anyways.

glad i am wrong. . next tire rotation, i will try and remove the rotors & calipers and antiseize the snot out of the hub face. .
[and if i feel brave, bleed the brakes :-laf]

Be careful doing that! The brakes rely on friction to transmit braking effort from the pads, through the rotors, into the hubs (and then into the axles).

I discovered this when I anti-seized the snot out of my front hub faces. The first time I hit the brakes I got a very loud BANG! as the rotor rotated until the stud holes contacted the studs. I got that same loud BANG every time I hit the brakes in the opposite direction from the last time.

I went back and cleaned off the anti-seize. Problem solved.

first off the drw do not slide off like the front(atleast on a 03) hub and axels gotta come off

heres what to do

READ YOUR LAST TDR ISSUE its outlined in the for hub removal(seen it three days after i was done)

you dont need the special socket for rotors (may need it for new bearings)

mark the key-way slot before disassembly, insert punch or like hardened round tool that fits and there ya go. im not talking the old school method tearing the nut up! just put it in a hole and tap on/off going on tap snug spin hub in driving direction lossen to key slot should be on your marked slot in 5-10 degrees check for in/out play (kinda like doing front bearings on 2wd)

all the specs are in the issue

oh

check with dealer to be sure the have a seal if not order 1-2

i broke 1 and had to drive 150 miles to get it on sat.

they are not like a reg seal i forget the name but the use them alot on equipment and they cost $40
