SIL asks me to bring my tubing flare kit just in case. "In case of what?" I ask....
Had a brake line leaking. I say "Set the reservations back a day so we can fix it.".... Oh no, dont need to do that, its fine...
Well guess what? He touches the bundle of lines after we get here, moves a plastic clip and brake fluid starts pouring out. Damn...
We are in Canada on an island with.no parts stores. Double Damn..
Load up and head out for Machias, Maine to get parts. I told him what to get if he wanted me to help. So a roll of copper nickle alloy line, bag of tubing nut and unions, bender,.and a.couple of quarts of Blake fluid come back into Canada with us. Both lines from.the master cylinder to the ABS pump shot and both lines from the ABS pump to the front wheels are shot as well.
Showed him how to reiplicate the old lines using zip ties and taught him to double flare tubing. I sat in a lawn chair giving instructions.....only replaced the bad sections.that fed the front wheels but had to completely replace.the master cylinder to ABS lines.
He finally gets it together yesterday (after fixing a bad flare job on one line, I finally crawled under the truck and redid it)so the next issue is bleeding it out. I looked at the front calipers and.there was.no way that the bleeder screws or brake lines banjo bolts could be trusted and I did.not want to make another frigin trip to Machias for a pair of calipers.
So I'm trying to teach him.several lessons here at one time because he deserves it.
I explain that the rear brake system is still full as are the front calipers and.lines. So I made him soak the connections on the frame where the connection is to each brake hose.
The nuts both started. So I had him loosen both lines on the ABS pump that came.from the master cylinder and let it gravity bleed.
Once that was done I had to get the air out of the ABS unit. So I go to the campground.help and explain that I will be whooping the truck back and forth on the back road and jamming the brakes on in an.effort to make the ABS actuate and.force the air out. Third try I felt the pedal come up. We bled the fronts at the brake hose connection, got two huge burps out of each side and.the brakes are fine.
Now maybe I can have a break....
