My rear view mirror fell off today. I went to a dealership and bought the glue on kit to glue it back on.

On the back of the button (part that glues on to the windshield), there is what appears to be a soft plastic pad. The dealer told me that is actually the old glue, and that I should glue the actual metal to the windshield. I would just take his word for it, but the pad just looks too plastic (not glue) to me. Has anyone had to do this recently ? And know exactly what is supposed to go there ?

Thanks

It has been manyyears since I had to do one, but IIRC, he is right, that is the factory adhesive and you DO need to remove it before re-gluing the mount.

Also, be sure to clean both the mounting tab and windshield with alcohol (rubbing, NOT beer..lol) before applying the glue, and be absolutely sure to let it cure before reattaching the mirror. I forget the cure time, prolly on the directions.

Then I guess thats what Ill do. I have had the windshield replaced on this truck twice though. So it is not the "factory" adhesive. Maybe something that the windshield replacement company uses.

The metal tab is glued directly to the glass. (Sometimes on a new window, this metal tab is pre-glued to the glass). Don't over think it. Just follow the directions to the letter. I did this about 10 years ago, and it's still holding.

BTW: The glue can be had at most auto parts stores; probably for far less than the dealer.

The above advise is correct. DON'T FORGET TO MARK THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD! Use masking tape or a grease pencil to mark where the mirror was. Once you remove the glue, you will lose your reference point. Resist the urge to put the mirror back on before the glue is 100% dry.
