I have began to notice after it rains the first time i step on the brakes, the drivers side rear wheel will lock up. I've had brakes lock up because of a wheel seal leaking, but never one that only did it after it rained. Usually, it does not do it if i drive it in rain, only if it sits for 6 hours or more and it rains on the truck. After the time using the brakes, everything is normal. Any suggestions for what to check?

My parents had a small pickup that would do the same thing. ie: put you through the wind shield the first time the brakes applied when wet. it did that for several brake shoe replacements and 125000 miles. Ive have had several Dodges and have not had that happen. might try a new set of shoes.

good luck

My brakes do that too. The consensus opinion is that the shoes are to blame. I'm not going to worry about it. When I change the shoes, I hope it goes away.

the problem is usually moisture sensitive shoes. if you can live with it it won't cause a problem. it usually goes away after the first few stops. otherwise change the shoes---the kicker is knowing what lining to use. ----Sam

We have a ton of trucks at work that this happens to. I got so P**sed off one day, I pulled the rear drum for a look without driving. There was surface rust, very thin on the drum. It would seem to me that after driving, the drums would heat up enough that after the truck was parked, water would condense on the drum surface. The first brake application after sitting would be the worst. Total grab. Big skidmarks etc. I found that if you could get enough speed,I could gently apply the brakes and "burnish the rust off" that my opinion any way.

A lot of owners adjust the rear drums by hand because the automatic adjusters don't work all that well. Maybe you should try that once. Mine lock up too but on both sides. If it is especially damp, I hold the brake on while heading down my driveway to dry them before I need them. Hate that jerking against the seatbelt.

maybe you guys have given me something to think about. . my 99 3500 EVERY morning after sitting all night will lock up the first 2 or 3 times the brakes are applied no matter how gently you apply them... jerks the heck out of your neck. slides the wheels. all four of them if not on pavement. [live in the country]... wife hates it. dealer says " gee we never heard of that"... it never ceases to amaze me all the things the dealers have NEVER heard of or had happen to any of the trucks they sell. absolutely amazing...
