seal

I have chicago rawhide, napa sells them, they don't leak. on the other I put a timkin seal from autozone. It doesn't leak either, looks cheaper, not as solid as the C. R.

Sterk,

Make sure you check the surface that the seal rides on. Many times the reason a rear seal leaks is from a groove being worn on the surface. A "speedy Sleeve" is the fix for this if a groove is the problem. You can get them at a bearing/Seal supplier.

how hard of a job is it to replace the rear axle seals. I just noticed that my passenger side seal has started to leak. Are their any spevial tools that you can't live without? Hopefully it is not a repair that needs to be done by the dealer. I haven't looked at the shop manual yet because i am out of town, but I had the info looked up at home and was told that a special seal installer was needed. Should I also replace the pads and shoes for the e-brake at the same time if they have been wet by the gear oil?

Thanks for the help.

It's not a hard job at all. I just did mine with the kit from quad4x4.com, and it only took a couple of hours. Most of that time was spent banging out the bearing races. The quad4x4 kit came with all the needed tools (big freakin' socket, seal and bearing installers). I also upgraded to the reuseable axle nut kit so I can pull the hubs at any time if needed without having to replace the factory nylon locknut and plastic locking wedge.

Count on the pb shoes to be shot from the lube, so I'd replace them. Another pleasant surprise was my disk brake pads falling apart when I took the caliper off, so I'd get a set of those, too.
