Rear Wheel Speed Sensor, Went out!

Man, that was weird. All of a sudden, No Speedo, And the Brake/ABS Lights were on Solid. The Auto Trans Shifted kinda Mushy too.



Called the Dealer for the New Sensor, Cost was $21, 10mins later I was back on the road!.



Maybe this electronic isint that bad after all, If it was a Speedo Cable, It would have took about two hours to replace!.

Some good, some bad stuff. Just wait and see if your VP44 goes out. Then you will want the good old stuff.



A bad speedo cable would not have killed you when you had to brake in an emergency, and you were not used to how the truck handled without the ABS.

A speedo cable wouldn't have gone bad on a three year old truck.

Yea, nothin ever goes wrong on a three year old truck. If it can be built, somebody can make it fail early. Just fail to lube the cable, and it won't take long. Lets not forget about sudden wheel spin and then get traction or brake. Good way to twist the cable off.

OK, I get your point. I know any machine can break. I really love my new Ram, I just prefer simple mechanical systems.

Don't we all wish that an electrical or engineering degree was not needed to fix our Rams. At least the TDR can steer us onto the right path. I guess the Cummins is probably the simplest diesel on the market to work on. The Duramax and Powerstroke systems are a little tight under the hood.

Where is the rear wheel sensor located?Have a 99 Ram.

Hi Harry,

I'm Sure the sensor is on top of the rear differential just like mine.

It has a Metal Plate around it to protect it from road debris. Its actually a Transducer,Because the rotating tone ring inside the differential cause's a freq and small voltage to be produced onto the sensor,then to the PCM. The pcm then can read the speed of the wheels. But they call it a "sensor".



wheel speed=freq=pcm input=speedo reading.

I hope this is right?.
