Should the rear wheels wear out quicker due to heavy load towing: especially with the 4:10 rear end? How about the 3:54? Single rears v. s. duallies.

Just turned 20,000 miles, switched rear tires to the front. Rear tires about 40 % remaining. Front tires about 60% remaining. Almost all of the miles are towing. Going to replace these LTX Michelins with XPS Michelins when they wear out.

Rear Tire Wear

My rear tires wear a little faster than the fronts. IMHO the factors are 1. High Torque 2. LSD causes scuffing in corners 3. Heavy foot.

One of my trailers is 6000 k empty and when its is loaded it carries a lot of tongue weight. Michelin XPS is the tire you want to run. I am using the XPS traction and find far better wear than the others ( and i have run them all). The casing is steel and can handle the heat better, and its the heat and weight that kills the tread.

Non towing, front tires wear the sides and require rotating to the rear faster than the rears wear. Towing 12,000 lbs (only 900 toungue wt) the rears wear faster than the fronts.

The rears will wear in the middle fast. If your towing, think about this. If you have 2000lbs on the pin, thats 500 lbs per rear tire. You don't need to run 85psi for that load. It just puts the tires on the center of the tread.



I have LTX's on my truck and have watched this happen time after time dating back to my 7. 3 ferd crew cab. I now run 50lbs in the rears, DC says 55 I believe. Even at 55psi I still have the wear in the centers. Mine are looking better. You should also rotate your tires at least every 10k miles. I saw no differance in fuel mileage at the lower pressure setting.



I guess you would have to get down to 45 or less in the rears if you don't load the truck or tow to get them from wearing in the middle.
