I had the Okie-Go on the rack this pm to get an estimate on cutting off the muffler. He noticed the oil in front of the rearend. He says get the oil leak first. Here I go to dealer and mehanic confirmed, seal is leaking and needs to be replaced before I tow or get on the highway. (16,500 miles on truck). Of course I tell him about all the towing and I even replaced factory oil with synthetic. He say don't matter with what you pull there is serious heat in there, lots of pressure. I say I am open for suggestions to keep this from occuring again. Make a long story short I order my mag-hytec tomorrow. Still frustrates me though. It was confirmed the rearend is a Dana 80.

Okie-Go
Was the rear end lube leaking from the differential cover? Or was it leaking from the pinion seal, where the drive shaft attaches to the rear end?

If either of those were, it was probably just sloppy work on the assembly line.

The Mag-Hytec will increase the lube capacity of the rearend. Thats good. Use a good Synthetic lube and don't overfill the rear diff.

IMO you don't need anything 'heavier' than a 75W-90 lube when it's high quality Synthetic product.

The leak was in the front where it attaches to the drive shaft. The back of the rearend was clean.

Yup, Thats the pinion seal. If it starts leaking again, they will have to put a new crush sleeve in. Or maybe they did both at the same time.

It shouldn't give you anymore trouble. #ad

I hope it gets fixed. I heard teh guy tell him he needs the inner and outer seal both. Maybe I should tell him to put the crush sleeve in also. Don't want anymore breakdowns.

Mine rear cover leaked with about 6 months/6,000 miles on the truck.
