How long can I let it idle?

Hello Folks,

after looking at the TDR site for almost a year I finally joined. So, this is my first post. I would like to start by saying, thank you for past information that I have received from you.

Now my problem, I have recently upgrade to a 2004 CTD from a 2003 CTD, and have noticed a whine in the rearend that starts around 50 mph and lasts until around 60 mph. It only has 600 miles on it. Should I be concerned about this? Or is this expected with a 11. 5" rearend? My other had the 10. 5" and it was very quiet. Anyhow, your thoughts would be appreciated.

I checked the rearend level yesterday, it was about 3/4" below the fill hole.

Mine is doing it too at about the same speeds. I am going to check with the dealer next week when I get my free oil change.

Free oil change?!? I didn't get any oil change! Bstrds!

about the rear end whine, a straight pipe will solve those problems immediately... :D

The dealer said that the rearend whine noise was inherent to some of the 11. 5" rearends. He also showed me some information he had received from Chrysler that stated this. Anyhow, it has been noted. So if I have any problem in the future it should be taken care of. I guess time will tell. Thanks for your replies!

Thanks for your replies!

After sleeping on it, I decided to call the dealer back and told him that I could not live with a whine in the rear end, and that a $37,000. 00 truck should not have a whine. He said he would contact the rep from Chrysler and get him down here to listen to it and make a decision. Also, has anyone in the Huntsville or Decatur, Alabama area have this same problem?

Thanks!

Anyone notice a low speed howl?

Just was wondering...

My '03 4x4 truck has about 11K miles on it now, and I notice that when slowing down in 6th between 40 down to 35 MPH there is a howl until I kick out the clutch at about 1000 rpm.

I don't speed up or drive in 6th at this speed, but I do leave the engine engaged at that speed to slow down while comeing into town. I don't notice the howl at that engine RPM in the other gears and I don't hear it at that road speed in 5th when slowing down. .

Has anyone else noticed this noise? I wonder if the automatic trannys have seen this? I am kind of worried about this noise. . I guess if it gets worse, I will see how well the drive train warrenty holds up. .

Yeah the autos have to. Mine does it between 18 & 25 mph. Sounds like a ghost WHOOOOO!!!! It is not rpm specific strictly speed. The dealer swore it was the TURBO. So in 20 degree weather I had my wife drive while I rode in the bed. It is definately from either the rear end or the carrier bearing.

I just started noticing it lately on my 04

I notice it a lot lately, after 12000 miles on the rig. Not comforting!!!!!!! It is more noticable when slowing down I guess at around 30 mph. :(

Keep us posted' My 04. 5 is awesome except a light whine when accelerating in 3rd and 4th gears once you are leveled out I don't hear it anymore only on the loud pedal, If I let off suddenly it instantly goes away any other 6-speeders have this?

Mine made a noise kinda like a jug hoot. So I looked around and found a loose intercooler hose. Tightened it up and noise went away. I hope this helps. Mine only did it in third and fourth while accelerating.

I see you have a 2WD. There are damped rear drive lines that will cure that whine in a hurry. Have your dealer contact STAR with the PN from your old shaft so they get the correct damped shaft.

I've been on hold since November 10th for the DC rep to get back to the dealership so they can fix my truck. The rep does not return the dealers messages anymore. This is the fourth attempt to fix my vehicles rear end and 30days in the shop since I purchased it March '03. You know what that means, the Lawyer has already been contacted!

I had a similar whine in a different vehicle and was told to switch to AMSOIL. It was like majic and went away. So, I have always used AMSOIL since. I have a MAG-Hytec diff cover and use 75W-90 AMSOIL. No whines except the turbo.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

First off, the dealer contacted star about the damped drive shaft and they said that they had no knowledge of it. Secondly, I have an appointment next Wednesday with the chrysler rep, I guess he will listen to my rearend and make a dicision. Hopefully in my favor! I will keep you posted. Thanks!

I noticed today a whine @ 1900 to 2100 rpm or about 65 to 69 mph only speed it happens and it doesn't matter accel or not. goes to the dealer Monday for the recall work and will put that on also. See what happens!

Hello Folk's,

well, the Rep from chrysler determined that my rearend didn't have a problem. He said that the AAM 11. 5" rearends have a 'whine' in them by design. "I don't think so!" Yet he could not explain to me why the three other trucks I test drove, did not 'whine'. Anyhow, I'm at a loss. What else can I do at this point? Your comments and thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
