Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) rebuilding a 12v

Hey-



found a good condition truck for sale with bad piston in it according to the owner. its a 96 with about 150 on it. The truck it cheap and looking to maybe put a new piston and head gasket in it and resell it... However, if its worse than just a piston. Whats a gasket kit and piston set cost for these motors. . im looking for a low budget build so how much in machineing costs am i looking at?

upper and lower gasket set will run ya about 400-500

after market pistons can be had for about 600 with rings

dont know much about machine cost

Why did the piston go bad? 150,000 is not much for these motors. If it melted then it is a sign the motor was run at pretty high EGT's. If it seized up then it is a sign the cooling nozzle for that piston will bear looking at.

The guy said he put a banks kit on it and on the first tow the thing blew. Cummins said it was prob a piston but wanted a grand to fix it so he decided to buy a new truck and sell this one

To have that sort of money..... I know that if you had a reputable dealer perform the operation, (pull the motor, re-sleeve the bore, piston, ring and gasket set, if that's all that is needed). It could run you $3-4,000. My point of reference is from a truck I looked at that had the same problem and I saw the bill for it.

What you are looking to do (turn it for a quick buck) seems fraught with all sorts of potential expenditures. Unless it is super cheap or you are bored, pass it by.

These engines are parent bore engines. In order to put in a sleeve the cylinder has to be bored first. If one piston has melted then others may have some problems too. No cheap way out by just replacing the piston and gaskets if there is damage to the cylinder.

It looks like I would probably be better off slapping a used working engine in rather than trying to rebuild, on ebay, one can be had for about 1500 bucks

I don't see too many, if any, complete running P-Pump engines sell on eBay for $1500, usually they are no where near that. I guess you would only need the long block and not the pump, turbo, and accessories so maybe $1500 is realistic
