I know y'all seen this one many times before :-laf however my turn now... Pump is leaking on top, front area. Truck continues to run well with 20+ mpg average. Gonna have my VE pump rebuilt by an authorized Bosch dealer in San Bernardino, "Diesel Injection Service", Mill street/215 fwy. They will turn 'er up a bit, warranty is unlimited mileage or 7-months, (uh, do you get that one:rolleyes:). $750 to $1300 depending on parts needed. Chime in Brothers and Sisters share your thoughts please:-{} It's the greatest expense I'm putting in my little beast in 9-years plus :D of service.

Godspeed y'all, Patrick.

I'd say your leak is around your throttle mechanism. Also, IIRC, it only cost like 500-600 dollars to rebuild and crank up our pumps here in WV.

What is needed if the pump is "sound" i. e. it operates well, starts right off and you haven't run gasoline through it, is a reseal (all seals, O rings etc,) and springs (the plate return and breakover spring, governor spring ). And the throttle shaft/bushing.

This will cost you about anywhere from 160. 00 (if you do it yourself) to $300-$400 for an injection pump shop. Plus they calibrate it.

If you are paying the $700+ that is a reman pump. A reman pump will contain some new items and some used items, calibrated to OE specs. It will be essentially the same as having yours tuned up/resealed. Your pump is a core only.

A rebuilt pump, costing $1,000. 00+ would contain the new hard parts such as the hydraulic head, governor assy, possibly a new shaft and/or vane pump along with timing advance, overflow valve KSB, shut-down solenoid etc. like new but with minimal used parts.

I'm not ranting... . I simply like to know what I'm getting, and with the reman pump on exchange, you will not know. I would ask for a list of hard parts replaced on the reman unit. Act like you know just as much as they do. They will be stumped and give you the information sheepishly or possibly not... ... ... ... . WE will coach you on this if you need assistance.

Let us know what (new) parts you are getting with your reman pump. I'd personally request that you have YOUR pump taken down to the last screw, inspected and resealed with the items I mentioned above. There isn't any sense in paying for a reman and getting used items back when you already have used items. If you pump isn't worn out per a pump flow test, get that thing reselaed.

Scheid recently quoted me $700 (plus) to take my good pump (but dripping fuel) and rebuild it, including some upgrade parts, calibration and a 10% increase in fuel delivery. The "plus" is if they find something wrong that wasn't anticipated.

Right. That (probably) won't include any hard parts..... perhpas the throttle shaft/bushing and some springs. Maybe the new shut-down solenoid... ... ... ..... But basic tear-down/ look-see and assembly is going to cost that. Testing it prior to (for a base-line) and afterwards, some tinkering adjustments.

They gotta pay for the employee/test equipment/utilities/taxes etc.

You should ask them what exactly they'd replace with that rebuild. Such as the hydraulic head/vane pump/cam AND rollers, drive shaft and bushing, the advance piston etc. Is that included with a rebuild? If not, it isn't a rebuild; it is a reseal.

Again they may or may not say. Likely, you will scare them if you'd ask as they will be suprised to know you know as much as they do.

To simply walk off with your $700+ resealed pump doesn't sound like money well spent, but that is simply my opinion. It's why I started to reseal pumps for folks. But that got old after awhile too... ... ... .

VE strategy...

Thanks a million everyone! You have given me good vocabulary and knowledge to work with when I walk back in the shop  I'll keep y'all posted before I spend a dime :D
