Has anyone had the dealer replace your cummins with a reman?

Does it last like a new engine?

What problems have you had with it if any?

Was this a warranty replacement. If yes, I would be highly upset. You started with a new engine not a used engine. Im sure it will last, but #@$%!

Have they done the replacement yet. If not, I would be hollering whoa and have them explain. You bought NEW not USED. What did the engine fail for  and what is there reason for doing a rebuilt other than it saves them money #@$%! Where in your warranty does it specify used or rebuilt parts for warranty work  Questions, questions and more questions. I don't like it. Not being rude here but it smells. Make them show it to you in writting where you signed that states that you will accept used parts on warranty work #@$%!

Its a REMAN not a REBUILT. Differant animals. Ask if its REALLY a reman. Lots of manufactures D. C. included label NEW as Reman. Has to do with taxes etc.

What's the differance from a rebuilt and a reman?

Ive never heard of a reman and rebuilt being any different. My ford had the transmission replaced on warrenty and the tag on the transmission said remanufactured. it was a rebuild not new. manufacturers tend to use the word "Remanufactured" while the public tends to call them Rebuilt. either way thay are the same. "new" is new thats it. I would raise cane untill they agree to put in a "new" engine. thats my . 02 good luck!

From what I understand "Remanufactured" indicates they went through it in it's entirety just like it would have in the first place, and ensure everything is still in spec. "Rebuilt" tends to indicate they just threw some parts in and called it good. I'm not sure if everyone goes by this but if the dealer got this from Cummins there's a good bet it's remanufactured.

There is a BIG differance from reman to rebuilt. One is to replace worn moving parts. Rings, bearings, chains, gears etc. REMAN is to put it through a COMPLETE reman/remachine to same tolarance as new with mainly the block/head/crank after machining being reused. Rest of internals are new. I have uncrated REMAN gas engines from D. C. that were NOT remans but new with a reman tag applied. The engine pulled from your truck will go through a complete reman process once returned. It won't just get a bore job and pistons, new bearings and be good to go. Some REMANS outlast new because the BLOCK/HEADS are seasoned. They have already been through hot and cold cycles etc. In ANY machinery the term REMAN and REBUILT are TOTALY different and priced differant.

The engines in these trucks is not a sleeved motor. They would be bored to true. Call Cummins and ask. Ask if its a REMAN or just badged a reman. If it was my truck with only 3k on it I'd really want another truck. Engine numbers etc. If it had 90k on it it would not matter to me if reman or new etc. If its REAL low miles get them to swap for another new, they'll fix the truck and sell it on the used car lot.

If you read your warranty book they can use new or reman parts. The only time they must use new parts is if it is unsold. If the truck has less than 1000 or so miles you can usually get a complete new line engine, but otherwise you are getting a reman.

Nothing wrong with reman. And as soon as you start your truck the engine is used, not new. If you were buying a wrecked Dodge Cummins to put in your Ford truck, and it was advertised as "new" but had 5000 miles on it, you would call the seller crazy. You would also not give him "new" price for it.

Funny how things are seen differently when the shoe is on the other foot.

Thank you for your reply. Is there a way I can find out were the engine came from or where the reman took place buy the serial number. Does Chrysler send it back to Cummins and have them go through it or do they do the reman themselves.

If you had a truck with 3500 miles on it would you have a reman put in or a new one from the line if you were in my place.

The truck had around 1000 miles on it when I was trying to get a tech to notice a problem. This has been a ongoing problem for the last month and a half. I bought the truck in July and had it in and out of service sence the 18th of August. Now its the 18th of September. Its been in service for a total of 20 days as of today. I also have a writen letter from one dealer that states there was a problem with the truck before I bought it.

Sag 2 what is your opinon?

This all sounds like garbage. D/C should just replace the truck! This is something I went through with Chevrolet back in 1989. I had a NEW 1 Ton Crew Cab Duelly that had such bad piston slap, anyone that had ears, thought I was driving a diesel. They tore down the 454 and replaced the pistons and a few other items. 3 weeks! I happened to visit the truck on a Sunday afternoon, to get something I left in the cab. I found the motor un covered in a open service bay. Leaves inside the motor with the intake off. Yes, I was a bit upset. Well, that motor lasted about 5000 miles and bang, rod through the block. New motor was installed. That one lasted another 10k and bang, rod through the block. Another "goodwrench" motor installed and within 3k, we were back to the piston slap. Finally, I got a lemon law buy back. It was a trip through hell with the BBB and then GM. Finally, I got all my $$$ back. I ended up with a new Ford. Only kept it a short time before I got my first CTD. A 90 1 ton 4x4. . Great truck but the ride finally killed my back. The next truck was another Ford, which I had until I bought my 98 12v Q-cab CTD 4x4. Put about 300k on it until I got my 04 305/555 CTD 4x4. POS! Dealer was at a loss to the problem and finally it was replaced with the 04. 5 3500 Q-Cab 4x4 that I LOVE! NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! Oo.

I would NOT accept any replacement motor. You bought a NEW truck. Not a New truck and a replacement motor! Start the buy back NOW!
