In a couple of weeks i will be picking up my new 2005 3500 turboD. i have just joined and thus have no adequate history of your earlier talks about the engine etc. I do see that there are or have been issues with the fuel system. Talking with the acessories folks at the dealership they suggested a fuel pressure guage and I have ordered that. Have there been any recalls on this rig? I would like to ensure that they are cleaned up prior to its leaving the Dealer lot.

By the way (if i am off topic I apologise) a buddy and i were stranded hunting a few weeks ago in an earlier (2004) 2500 when the spare tire apparatus failed to function due to mud and a poor design. Required troublesome and dangerous under rig activity on a mountainside. Have they made one that works now? Any preventive steps to take?

I have a 97 2500 Suburban, 2003 Expedition, BMW 97 sedan M3 daily driver and BMW touring racer that I campaign. This truck will replace the 97 to haul the racing rig. The recent posting on break in is very very valuable to me.

Thanks

What issues are you refering to? I don't think there is any big fuel issue on the 05's. They got a new in tank lift pump, and I haven't heard of failures yet. The pre 05 had an external lift that was a big failure item.

A fuel issue that you should consider is the fuel tank vent nipples sucking in water if they don't have a hose attached, as most don't. No TSB but an easy DIY.

go to

I was unaware that the 3rd gens with the external pump had major problems... or as you put it, was a big failure item. I personally have not heard of that many with any sort of problems. Actually, the 3rd gen's as a whole have been quite trouble free, especially when you take into account the amount of recalls/tsb's issued. Of course there are some spots that have caused issues for some such as death wobble, ball and U joints, and some driveline vibration. But as a whole I believe the vast majority of 3rd gens are on the very good side of the reliability scale. I could be wrong, but comparing these trucks to the others out there, reliability and durability is definitely in Dodge's corner... for once.

"big" is relative, but I suppose overstated. It seems it is the largest fuel related issue here on the 3rd gens. And DC redesigned the lift system and now retrofits the intank system when the one of the external pumps fail.

I am probably out ot date. I read the chats and saw the troubles with the lift pump. I take it that that has been corrected. I am counting on the reliability. Our pointed out very forcibly that we count on the truck to get the car home and that a 97 with 100,000miles was chancing it. I found a 3500 with a 6 speed, ordered a lighted, lined canopy with an isolated battery to support heat (for tires, dogs etc)tow pac, flaps, airhorn (needed one once!), spray bed liner with rubber insert on top(wet dogs) and keen to get started now. Just want to know if recalls out there, will ask dealer too, but not all salesmen are fully helpful. Thanks Again. . Stretch

There have been no recalls on my 05 nor any lift pump issues. I can't say anything about the spare tire hardware since I haven't used it yet.
