Hello. I haven't posted alot before. Would someone be able to help me???

I have a 1997 Dodge 12 valve Cummins with a 47RE auto transmission and 127K miles. I had the torque converter and valve boby replaced last summer with Goerend products. The transmission has been working fine until last Saturday. I pulled the truck into the garage and drove the front end up on ramps to replace the oil & filters. When I drive up on ramps I put the truck into 4x4 low. Nothing was touched except the oil change. When I came down off of the ramps, I stopped to put the truck into 4x2. I always seem to have trouble getting out of 4x4 low with the truck running. I pushed the 4x4 lever forward into the neutral position then attempted to put the truck transmission into neutral as well. I got some gear grinding sound for a second much like putting a manual transmission into gear without the clutch. I didn't think much of this because it's happened before without incident. If this happens I turn the truck off and then put the truck into 4x2 (which I did).

The next time I drove the truck I noticed a couple strange things. The 1-2 gear change seems to "drag out" a bit whereas before it was a crisp shift. When the 2-3 gear change comes up the transmission seems to "slip" for a brief moment before catching. I also notice the engine rpm jumps up a bit when this happens whereas before the engine rpm wouldn't vary at all as it shifted through the gears before TC lockup. The slip doesn't last very long however it's quite annoying. The truck then proceeds through all the gears with no problem. The truck otherwise runs fine except for the before mentioned.

Any ideas what may be going on here? The transmission has never given me problems and has always had synthetic oil. Years ago after a transmission oil change at the shop the shift from 2-3 was "hard" after. It lasted for approx 6 months then went away. I always assumed some dirt got into the valve body?

Sorry for the long winded explanation, however any ideas whats going on and should I even bother worrying about it? It just seems odd this would happen right after the engine oil change.

Thanks in advance for any advice given!

You can check and adjust Throttle Valve cable. This can cure shifting problems.

You can adjust front band. This can cure shifting problems.

Grinding not good! Clutch or gear.

You need to buy Factory Service manual. Geno's Garage has them but if you need instructions on how to do it right now e-mail me ( I have 96 service manual) for instructions on how to adjust Throttle vavle cable and/or Front band.

I would do the Throttle cable first.

I second checking the tv cable, however according to your post the truck worked fine before the "ramp" incident.

As for the grinding, every auto hub 4x4 I have ever owned has done that. It seems that the only way they co-operate is if the lever is moved smartly and it has always helped me if the truck was moving slightly.

I would try to put it into four low again and then move it back into 2 high. Maybe it has somehow gotten stuck in between?

I'd call Dave and ask for input. He likes to help.

As for the shifting, I put the truck trans in N, wait a few seconds for everything to stop spinning, and then shift the T-case lever 'smartly' (I like that description). If it resists and stops in neutral, I kill the engine and wait for it to stop spinning.

i hve a 98 and mine seems to shift from 1st to 2nd too early and then slip for a second before it grabs. other than than that no problems. 125,000 miles.
