I have a friend with a 2001 auto and believes he needs his ECM rebuilt. I didn't even know a 2001 had an ECM!
Anyone have a recommended re-builder?

I think an '01 does have a simple ECM but finding a "rebuilder" would not be something I'd want to do. I am not sure they are available through the MOPAR system any longer and if some clown damages it, which is likely, what does he do then?

I think I'd try hard to find a replacement from a salvage yard. I think they are specific for automatic or manual and SO or HO.

An 01 has a complicated ECM as it has to run the VP-44, APS, etc.

Do a google search, flip a coin and pick one. There doesn't seen to be any one better than the others. A local diesel shop may be able to reccommend as they would know the track records.

AVOID Auto Computet Exchange (ACS) in Davie, FL at all costs. They have an "F" rating with the BBB. For some entertaining reading do a Google search on: "Auto Computer Exchange complaints"

The safest place to get a refurbished ECM is from Cummins. It comes with a warranty but is expensive. It would need to be programmed on the vehicle at a Dodge dealer or by someone with a Chrysler DRBIII scan tool.

No re-builders that I know of. Safest thing is to dole out the cash. I just paid 1550 for a new one installed. $150 was for labor. It was brand new from Cummins.

I don't know much on a 2001 but on my 98. 5 I went through this drill a year ago and had to replace my ecm. I went through Diesel ECM.com and they sent me a rebuilt overnight!! They even programed it using the vin number and engine serial number. It's been running great and have no complaints.

What every you do DO NOT go to ECM Outlet!! They are a big rip off and have numerous complaints filed against them. They have been know to steel your ecm, or do such shotty work that it fails. They have no true mailing address (they use a UPS store) and the contact number is one of those answering services.

I bought one from a company in Florida that I found on Ebay. (It might have been auto compuer exchange) Can't remember the name but it cost me $500 + core and that was 2006? and it's still going with no problems. The only complaint I have is that they didn't do a fantastic cleaning job on it but it's covered in oil now anyway. DC wanted $1100 back then. No idea now...

I would try to troubleshoot all you can before "hanging" an ECM and hoping to get lucky.
