Hey guys - I'm needing to change the fluid in my transfer case and I noticed that it calls for ATF +4. I don't want to go to the dealer for fliud so is there anything that will substitute for this?

Thanks!

Thanks Justin - I checked out the site but it looks like the Redline C+ ATF is what covers the ATF +4 specification. I may try some of that - any thoughts?

I use the D4, but C+ should be fine too.

The important part is that it meets GL-4 requirements, IIRC.

Remember, the difference in the ATF +3 is that it's friction modified for clutch packs.

The t-case has no clutches in it, so it doesn't matter what grade of ATF you use as long as it meets the right gear lube specs.

I'm not sure if it's GL-4 or GL-5 that is required.

GL-5 is better, but harmful to yellow metals (brass) which you (EDIT) have in a T-case on the synchro.

I see no reason not to use any ATF that's GL-4 rated.

Excellent info Justin. That's good stuff - I'm probably going to end up going with either the Redline C+ or the Amsoil ATF fluid. They're both about the same price. Wish I could find some good stuff that I could just buy local but I'll probably have to end up going the mail-order route.

Thanks for the help once again!

i get dextron 3 at napa for the t case. witch i lucky since ive had to change it about 5 times in the last 2 months. i do run redline in my transmission though

Mobil 1 Syn ATF

I have been using Mobil One FULL Syn ATF in the transfer cases of our farm trucks. Works good. Should meet all ATF 3+ requirements.

;) I would say there's not much brass in a T-case, thats a brass syncro you see between the two gears ;)

This picture is for those who are thinking about a regular gear oil, its a picture of the oil pump and suction screen, can you imagine trying to suck gear lube through that tiny tube on a cold morning? :(

Dont use gear weight oil. The xfer case needs 20W or close, gear oil is too thick as posted above.

My preference is Royal Purple Synchromax.

Just another option for you.

Thanks for the correction!! I had no idea they messed with a synchro! I'm editing my previous post to reflect your accurate information.

Gl-4 is the best bet.

The syncronizer is for the "shift on the fly" four wheel drive, on a CAD equiped truck it spins the front driveshaft up to speed before the CAD engages, I assume its still there on a non CAD truck to exactly match the front and rear driveshaft speeds to prevent grinding.

If anyone wants to see whats inside a T-case theres a couple more pictures in my readers rigs gallery...
