I just bought an '06 2500 and checked the tire pressures. The dealer inflated all the tires to about 46 psi for delivery, but the door placard says for an unloaded vehcle (light load) that the rear tires should be 45 psi and 60 for the front. Any thoughts on this? I am assuming that the fronts are supposed to be higher pressure just becasue of the weight of the Cummins.

On my 02 Ram I just run 65 psi all around. Seems to help on tread wear and also mileage. Haven't seen any adverse effects.

When I hook up the trailer then I boost the rear to the Max... 80 psi.
 
On any of my SRW trucks I've had, 50-60 front and 45 rear, empty, 60+ psi loaded on the rears. If I was towing heavy, or a heavy load in bed, max allowed, per sidewall markings.
 
Tire pressures

My placards give various pressures at various loads and speeds. My experience is that they are fine for the rear tires but underinflate the front tires when lightly loaded. I come to this conclusion due to tread wear being even but less in the center of the front treads. I'm getting about 80,000 miles per set of tires, Michelins, about 1/3 of my miles are with decently heavy loads.
 
All trucks, loads and conditions vary a lot. Get a piece of builders chalk, the BIG stuff they use for concrete work, find a level paved piece of road. Put a thick stripe across each tire and roll the truck a few blocks or whatever it takes to show wear on the chalk. If it wears off evenly you are at a good pressure. If it wears outside-too low. Center wear-too high. I did this a couple of times to get ideal pressures for different loads and wrote them down. Now I know and don't need to guess or wear out a set of tires finding out.
 
Thanks guys. I guess tires are like eveything else these days; you need to find what works best using the OEM specs as a starting point. I'll have to experiment a little bit. I like the chalk idea, that's definitely up my alley. Thanks for all the input.
 
E-rated tires here... i run 80 all the time. Makes for a little rougher ride, but if I gotta put a load in the back quick, theres no messin with pressures. I get good wear outta my tires this way.
