I will be relocating to the Southwestern portion of Washington State. Between Olympia and Aberdeen to be more specific. I'm due for tires and was wondering what you guys up there are running and why? I have been using the Firestone Steeltex Radial R4S, LT265/75R16, Load range E.

I have been reading the information on the site in regards to tires and if I am understanding correctly, there is no need for me to run Load Range E's on a 2500 4x4. That I can't put enough weight in it or behind it to warrant the Load Range E tires.

Thanks,

Steve

While I can't speak for everybody. I've seen plenty of Diesels at local events running Les Schwab tires. They're typically the Open Country or Wild Country. I went with Load Range "E" Wild Country tires just to be safe. I have a slidein and I tow my Jeep on the trailer.

Go with something from Les Schwab's. They have stores EVERYWHERE, and carry Toyo's as well as their generic house brands.

Their warranties are great. I've had them fix flat tires on rigs where I didn't buy the tires from them and there was no charge!

I put Toyo M606 tires on my Ram. It was like driving a different truck after I replaced the factory Goodyears. The Toyos have a little over 30k miles on them now, and look like they will go at least another 30k.

Edit:

I found this link for tire manufacturers' codes. This data is right after the "DOT" markinks on the sidewall. This should help determine the manufacturing plant and location of those generic tires.

Some really good advice on the previous posts. Michelin, Toyo or Schwab and get them siped if they aren't already.

Welcome to prettiest part of this great country.

:) :) :)

Tires in SW washington

I just bought a set of Les Schwab Open Country 285/75/16 Load D siped for $740. 00 installed and out the door. You can't beat Schwabby's service and warranty. The are very quiet and grip very well.

Goodluck and enjoy

Dave

Welcome to Washington State Steve!

I have been extremely happy with my 285/75R16D BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires (well over 53k on them). I later switched to BFG 295s and have been at least equally happy with them as well.

There is one tire you may want to consider...

my friend "Big Bob" here on the TDR BB just purchased a set of Nitto 305/70R16E (<--- that's right, E rated) tires (can't remember the model name however, they are an all-terrain type tire). He has said he is quite pleased with them.

Hi Steve;

I left Washington a couple years back after 16 years.

I am not a Les Schwab fan. They just plain lied to me and really messed up my tire siping. To be honest I think they really lack what it takes to be a true tire shop. I got the "because you moved away you're screwed" warranty from them.

I've had much better service from Sears and Costco. If you want Michelins, Costco is the first choice. Sam's Club is another.

The nice thing is Costco and Sam's are mostly nationwide. Cannot same the same about Schwab job.

What's your need? Highway, offroad, or combo?

I agree with John. Local tire shop owner and diesel owner recommends BFG tires, too. Avoid Goodyear.

I used to live in Central Idaho for 12 years. I bought most of my tires from Les Schwab. While they might have been a little more expensive, their service was excellent and fast. If you pulled in and they were not busy, everyone would work on changing your tires. I have never seen a tire chain which was so fast.

There was a lot of snow in the winter where I lived. I had a set of summer tires and studded winter tires. Because I lived on a windy road I rotated my summer tires once a year and my winter tires once a year also. They would fix flats (even on non Les Schwab tires) for free. But this Les Schwab dealer was in a town of 3,000. I wish they were in Missouri.

I agree about having them siped. KL:) :)

Welcome :)

Steve; First off, welcome to the great state of Washington. You will find it both awsome, and confusing at the same time. The confusing part is just from the state government, the awsome part is from everything else. You will be in a part of the state that I find very beautiful and not part of the Puget Sound area. The Seattle/Tacoma/Everett areas offer all that you would ever need with more than enough people, plus some. From Olympia south is very nice and quiet.

I have to go with about everyone else here and recomend Les Schwab for tires. Their service is great and offer a number of different brands. I did have trouble with one warranty item, but it was resolved with a nice call to the corp. office. We have to remember that they are independently owned.

Hope the move goes well for you.

Dan

The state of washington is in **** poor shape and its not looking and better anytime soon.

Been here since 1980

Welcome to Washington

I too moved to Washington State about two years ago. I work oversea most of the time , but my wife and kids love the state as much as me, after leaving leaving california for Thialand and Australia due to my work in 1996 ina great experience. We knew we want green and rain was not an issue after 6 years in the tropics. I can not wait to get home for my leaves which total 6-7 weeks a year. I am looking forward to some Salmon fishing and hopefully an early retirement in 3 years. . :D

As to Les Swab, a thumb up. I was in charge of pipeline construction project in Northeren california and they took good care of us. I have found the local dealer in Washougal/Cammas to be resonible, but one salesman took advantage of my wife, but another later tried to refectify the injustice and smooth it over on the next purchase.

You will do fine by them. Their service area is Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and northern California and possible Montana I.

I only wished I gone with Wildcat 285/75/16E studed snow tires on the Dodge instead of 265/75/16E. but with two set of tores, one on the Suburban and one on the dodge (both the same sizes) I doubt we will ever wear them out. :D

Bob I was born and raised here! I saw this state go from the very best state in this country to what it is now...

sad but true.

Only time will tell if things get better.

Otherwise there is always ******* or ******.

A mixture of tires and ..........

Not sure how we went from tires to the State of the State, but I'm also concerned about that and if I may put in my 2 cents... .

I've grown up in California and this will be the first time I have lived outside of the Sunshine State. I've been searching up statistics on the state of Washington and it doesn't look any worse than some of the other states. So far Washington is looking at a 3. 2 billion dollar budget shortfall (it may be higher by now). There is no State tax, the sales tax is 8. 5% and may climb. The property taxes are high and they assess your property every 4 years. Growth is slow, single digit growth, but very steady. There was a drop in Real Estate prices in 91 but it came back the following year. The state is 74% Caucasion and most of the people moving there are caucasion. The Puget Sound area (Seattle and surrounding areas) is in a slump right now, unemployment is high, housing prices are flat if not still down.

If you want to talk about the state of California, it's a mess, if

not a far worse mess. There are too many people and they keep coming. At our quarterly meeting one evening I asked if all those that were a native of California would raise their hand. Out of 46 people there were 7.
