to all of you that bought (when they were new) 1st gen Diesel rams---thank you for keeping Cummins and Dodge interested in each other long enough for me to get mine. ---wanted one in '89 but couldn't, again all thru early 90's---changed body in 94 and i wanted to cry/puke/change nationalities/etc. , until the round-ram began to grow on me (noticed the resemblance to an early 60's International)--- BTW, lemme get some opinions... up the road there's a 160HP 5sp. D350 (rectangular!!)w/96K for $8000... sound like possible good bargain in case i want to get a "hot-shot" biz underway??don't know what year---

Rich, I run 3-4000 miles a week in my 92 hotshot. Personally 8K dont sound too bad but just think about the miles do add up fast in a hotshot. Can't offer way too much advice in the truck purchase. Just inspect & reinspect the truck. Autos are trash for 36,000lbs of weight But the 5 speed is a little weak in that area as well. You WILL love the pulling power of the Cummins. And I also own a 99 Feard that cannot keep up with my Dodge that has 210,000 + miles on it. Just my . 02 cents worth. Mike

I beg to differ; the old 727 3 speed auto is the toughest auto transmission ever built. Add a gear vendors overdrive, fill both with Amsoil, and theyl'll last as long as the truck!

what years were the Getragged and any other 5-speed candidates installed? Heard/read horror stories about Getrag, and in the newer ones, a 5th gear problem w/NVG4500. Compared to my 98. 4, that motor looks NEKKID!
I dig my roundram, but there's still something inherently #ad
about an older one, especially when the innards should still be pretty cherry (only 96K)... appreciate any and all input, including Max Bomb Potential on the 160engine and rotary distrib pump--isn't it about 215-ish without major mods?---rich

My friend that had a '91 (non-intercooled) and 3 speed auto trans with the 4" drive shaft and grossed 25-30K routinely (beekeeping) and I thought he would fry up the trans in no time. But he didn't. He kept it stock though. Another guy driving overheated it in Utah and part of the trans cooler lines actually melted and an A/C hose blew out because of heat radiating from the turbo. But no replacement of the trans was necessary. I prefer the manual trans and I would pass on the 4 speed.

The best mod for power is an injector change to JRE's (old school's former rig) or to some injectors from POWER WAGON (factory stock Bosch). Accurate pump timing and a smaller "nozzle" turbine housing (16, 14 or 12 cm2) will put HP to around 230. These mods are cheap (relatively) too. I and others can get over 25 psi of boost, verses 13-15 psi stock, at full load and if the "10 HP per psi" rule means anything we're making power.

I'll add some comments and experiences about my former '92 Cummins with a proud 1st Gen body wrapped around it.

('91 1/2 and LATER are the trucks that came with the intercooler, CPL 1351 (21cm2 hot end housing, CPL 1579 (18cm2 hot end housing), and these engines had 7mm injector bores, vs 9mm on the earlier ones. The 7mm left more metal on the head between the valves and injectors, and solved any head cracking problems. )

The motor had about 170k on it in May,(just broken in), and as it looking "naked", I saw it as lean muscle, i. e. no pudge or baby fat, sitting in an engine compartment you could actually work in.

The gearbox was a Getrag, with no problems, as was the stock clutch.
The only gear to consider is the 3. 54. No compromise, end of discussion.
Injectors were JRE's, modified tips and pintles. Not extrude honed.
Hot end turbo housing was a 16cm2.
Exhaust was 3 1/2 Banks, properly modified and muffled at JRE.
Pump was bench turned up, and timed at 1. 35mm (critical)
Mpg was 22+, Power was Big Medicine.

This is of course, a brief description of the truck that had never let me down, or stranded, for quite a few years.

Rich M: Scan some of the past posts, and the 1st Gen archives for some interesting tips, tales, and advice along the 1st Gen trail.

Good hunting.

'98 2500, Cummins 12v, 5spd, 4wd, 3. 55, 300 injectors, JRE III power kit, 4" turbo to tail system, boost/pyro, did I mention 12 valves? GOT DIESEL?

I own a 92 250 4x4 auto with 92k and never had a problem with the trans. I also own a 74 250 4x4 with a snow plow that has a 727 that still works. 26 years of going back and forth pushing snow isn't to shabby! Jsut change the fluid every year and try not to get it to HOT! #ad
