How Long Do You Let It Drain?

I hear the Red Cross is bickering amongst themselves over all the mulla they collected in the wake of the twin tower destruction.

They took in something like 500 million bucks for the families of the terror attacks. Some 200 million has been distributed, supposedly, but some of the top people at Red Cross want to hang onto the rest of the dough.

What do you guys think should happen with that money?

Poll options:

1. The money was meant for the families, so give it to them

2. No need to make make someone rich. Use some of it on something else

3. Use it to give the Red Cross execs a raise

4. Give it all the the government

5. Use it to make the biggest bomb ever and drop it on Afghanistan

I can't vote until the right choice is there. All the money collected was never intended for just the victims families. The Red Cross is right in saving some for future needs, like blood and aid for our ground troops in Afghanistan. Don't forget the Red Cross goes to war also. Many of the real big donations to the Red Cross were given with the stipulation that they go for other needs than the victims families. When I hear of one family member complaining of only getting $30k a week after the attack it makes me want to puke. You can bet the families of our boys in Afghanistan won't see that much if their son comes home in a box.

Your right Bill, They will get a pine box a Bronze Head Stone, an American flag with a 7 gun salute fired 3 times, and Moma will get his Purple Heart and any other campain metals, 10 grand and a thank you very much Mam. he was a fine young soilder.

I would never give a dime to the Red Cross!!! Reason? When my Dad served in WWII and came off the line, for some relief, the Red Cross charged the GI's for their coffee and donuts at the aid station. When I was in the USMC during the Vietnam war, all they ever wanted was my blood or my money. ( I was already giving all my Blood to the USMC ) I know the Red Cross does some good things "BUT" there are better organizations that need the support. The fund that was advertised by the Red Cross was for the victims of the September 11 attack, period. ( I saw the adds on TV ) Now they want to change the rules, or say that we did not read the fine print. That is Cr**. The President of the Red Cross resigned because of this issue. She is a person with character. The rest of the board seem to be lacking that quality. I'm not disappointed in their discision since I never gave them a chance to munipulate my donation. Just my 2 cents :)

Overhead

The Red Cross has aproximately 89% overhead. That means that 11 cents of every dollar donated gets where it is intended.

Will I give a penny to the Red Cross? NEVER! ! !

The Salvation army does a much better job at distributing money. They have much less overhead, the Red cross spends most of their money talking about how good of a job they do and tooting their own horn. When you see a salvation army store it's some old beat up building with outdated equipment BUT it serves the purpose. The Red Cross is a political organization and whenever you involve politics, you get bureocracy (sp?) and red tape and inefficiencies. OR, you could just give to a local church. they tend to get more of the money to those in need as well.

But the red cross does do a good job with blood. I just think that if you're going to be a charitable organization you should spend most of the money on charities, not on advertising and on execitive salaries.

Maybe a "legal eagle" can step in to verify this, but if a charity solicits a donation from me for "Cause A" and then, without my permission, diverts my contribution to "Cause B", that constitutes fraud by inducement. This could get very interesting... .

Ask

My wife has been a member of the Red Cross for years and I for one think it has helped more people since its founding than we will ever know. She has gone out for every home fire in the area and given imediate aid to the familys in need. Things like housing, clothing, and food. To expect the Red Cross to give these familys a income for the next twenty years is ludicrist! The Red Cross gives imeidiate aid to help familys back on their feet PERIOD. Are they supposed to change their policys for one disaster?I don't think so.

They give help to familys stricken by floods, tornados, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. If you give to the Red Cross or any other relief, you give and leave it to the reliefs policys to hand it out. It may be one of us that needs help next. I just hope they have the money to help then.

They do a lot more things for our GIs in wartime than give out donuts. They also help familys back home in need and help keep familys in touch with loved ones in the field. They also give emergency medical training, first aid,CPR,and other lifesaving classes.

The Red Cross local chapters have needed funds for years. It is my opinion that these monies should be distributed to them. So they may help at a local level. That way it stays in America,it was America that gave.

I wouldn't PI$$ down the throat of the RED CROSS if its belly was on fire... ..... My father was a SEA BEE in the Navy... . Needed to get home for his Grandmothers Funeral. RED CROSS wouldn't help... ... ... . SALVATION ARMY did. I NEVER pass one of their pots without puttin' some folding money in. This is just my opinion, I could be wrong... ..... NOT

Plenty of

The Red Cross helped send home four guys I knew who had family members die when I was overseas. However you have to make the request through your company CO and they have to verify the death in the family. Maybe Grandmoms don't fall under imediate family?Or maybe someone didn't cross their T,s. It happens.

I was in the field for two months and out of touch with mail once. My folks contacted the Red Cross, who in turn contacted my superiors, who chewed me out and sent a ship out to pick up mail at once!Every Red Cross station I saw had a can for donations, but never made you pay for anything.

I saw several people after a local flood who swore the Red Cross didn't do a thing for them. Come to find out they expected the Red Cross to rebuild their homes and give them a income until they moved back in. Some people want something for nothing. Our local Red Cross even went as far as going door to door in the flood area to help people. This is usually not done.

I do realize that the Red Cross is a large bureacreacy and a very political organization. It is easy to get lost in the system and to lose sight of common sense. But,all in all a worthwhile organization. I may be wrong... ... ..... NOT.
