Red Valve Cover Gasket ?

My red valve cover is due on monday and I was wondering if it is possible to use the present gasket with the new cover? I currently have 5000 mi. on the truck. Cummins wanted almost $40. 00 for a new gasket and I thought if I could not reuse I would look elsewhere for the gasket set. Also is there a torqur spec. on the cover bolts? I can probably answer my own question if someone can tell what the gasket is made of.

The gasket is reusable, just be very careful when you remove the original valve cover. If it tears, you'll be out $40.

I used the original gasket when installing a red Cummins vc on my truck. The original is a thick gasket, seems pretty durable.

H. O. RAM, I see in your sig. that you are runnig the Banks high ram, where did you get thisand how much?

Yeah you can re-use the old gasket,but I went ahead and put the extra $40 worth in anyway. It took care of my slight old leak coming down the right side of the motor.
Forget the torque,the bolts that hold the valve cover on are shouldered. Tighten them down until they stop. That DOESN'T mean impact them until they stop!
P. S it will look cool in the engine compartment.

Hi Steve, The best price I could find on the High Ram was at www.woodlawnrv.com.
$255 plus freight. They are in New Jersey.

burndog, the shouldered bolts are only used on the '00+ valve covers which can be identified by the small hex head (as opposed to the larger earlier valve cover bolt heads).
