I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like the Valve Covers on the 03-04 models! I would love to have the same cover as on the regular 5. 9 engines. But I am not sure if they would fit like the one have have now?? Does anyone have any info on this subject. Has anyone out there changed the Cover??

The MY03 and beyond have the crankcase ventilation system integrated into the valve cover. The plastic cover on top of the valve cover serves to cover up the breather system as well as provide routing for the ventilation plumbing.

It would be difficult to eliminate these parts without major modifications to the replacement valve cover to incorporate the breather. The other option is to add the front mounted breather from MY02 or prior but is is not nearly as effective on eliminating oil carryover from the ventilation system.

Thats exactly what I want to do to mine. Did you do it your self or take it to a shop. How would someone go about getting one painted like that. I think yours looks pretty frign' sweet.

Do it your self it is easy. go to the store and get some of that Krylon Fusion paint for plastic. take the 4 bolts off of the cover. remove the cover from the motor mask the mighty cummins logo. Paint . on the lettrering use a foam brush. let dry 2 hours . put cover back on. Show friends:D

Red Valve Cover

Scott... . that cover looks very nice! Did you paint it yourself? And how did you paint around the lettering on the cover?

Another question. Where is the Air Intake going that I see in your pics? Did you make a hole in the stock air box?

Thanks for sharing this info with us.

I painted the valve cover myself, very easy job.

Now for the air box I cut a 3" hole in front of the air box, right next to the intercooler hose. This is in direct line of the grill. next I put in a PVC threaded coupling, with the threads on the front of the air box. I bought a 3" cap that will screw in the fitting, this is in case it rains or a snow storm. Forgot to mention this is below the AFE air filter. This has worked good for me.

Red Cover

Scott: Did you have to scuff the cover with a scotch brite pad and follow with a tack rag. Also noticed your fan shroud lettering painted yellow all looks real good. Oo.

Scot, NICE detailing! I especially like the yellow "Caution Fan" lettering... I'll do that to mine in the spring.

BTW, did you paint right over the engine data sticker that is on the passenger side of the plastic breather cover?

I took that bar coded engine sticker off and relocated it on the coolant recovery tank. Truck has had the early re flash and dealer said nothing about the data sticker relocated.

That won't work because the serpertine belt now passes right over the spot where the breather screwed in on the 2nd Gen 24 valves.

The older valve covers will not bolt on because the bolts are in different locations.

I removed my plastic cover 'cause I'm not a fan of Plastic Fantastic.

valver cover

My question is, do the 5. 9's in motorhomes and other trucks have the same Crankcase Vent system? Because the ones I have seen don't appear to have this on them. Or is this something just for the Dodge?
