I'm shopping for a new truck but am living the ol' 12v versus 24v debate! I have a 12v now and there's a few things I don't like about them and I'm thinking of going back to the 24-valve camp.

My main dislike for the 24v is the stacatto chatter especially from the HO. I can live with faulty lift pumps and troublesome VP44s (although in 100,000 miles I had zero problems). The noise is one of the primary reasons I sold my '01 HO. On long road trips the din got wearisome. On most 12-valves you can hardly hear anything on the highway, and that's the way I like it. If I could make the 24v quieter somehow, going back to a 24v is an easy decision.

Is there some way of shushing the motor a little without having to install 500 lbs of Dynamat or engine blanket? I'm not talking 3rd gen quiet but 12-valve quiet. Do any of the boxes or injectors help? I have not been keeping up on 24-valve tech too much lately. I have noticed at dyno and other events some 24v trucks are almost as quiet as a 12v, but have never figured out what the differences are.

Vaughn, fuel quality, Injector ballance and the # of turbos have a huge affect on engine noise.

My Truck with M4s idles somewhat smooth on summer fuel, but it hates winter fuel.

I just ran a tank full of 50% Home Brew Biodiesel/Winter blend #2, and the idle is dead smooth, throttle responce is better, and the surging I normally encounter when the weather is cold is now gone!!! Exhaust smells better too!!!

Oh, she sounds like a 12 valve too!!!

Same as Diesel Freak here. B100 made mine alot quieter as far as the pinging and at times sounds like a 12V. Darn thing runs better on bio than it did on #2.

One thing you can do to help knock down some of the clatter is put on an RV valve cover. They are aluminum, and much heavier than the magnesium covers used on the later models. It made a noticeable difference on my HO.

Lots of interesting input :) I was hoping some new whiz-bang technology had come along to shush the 24-valve, but at least it's good to know I have options ;)

If I go 24-valve it'll be the ETC, loaded with Mach 1. 6s, Smarty or Catcher, throw in some biodiesel and add a heavier hoodliner. I'm not into covering my engine with blankets and padding, although I may put some Dynamat on the oil pan. I wonder if the 3rd Gen bed plate or the addition of a mains girdle will quiet things down?

Vaughn one other thing I am thinking about is my gearvendor. With the reduced RPM it is definitely quieter. If you would like to take a drive and or ride let me know ;)

The magazine "Diesel Power" had an article in their latest issue, about an exhaust system, which REDUCED the stock exhaust note by 0. 34db!!!

I think the system was a 4" Borla.

Rob, I would definitely be interested in getting together for a test drive

Cummins Thunder: I'm not too concerned with the thunder coming from the tailpipe, it's the chatter clatter under the hood :)

i read a window sticker once that said REAL TRUCKS RATTLE they are diesels guys crank em up they are supposed to be loud. if we wanted quiet trucks wed all drive gassers... .....

You could allways buy you a Powerstroke my freind has one and every time I pull in his yard he says turn that noisy Sun of a batch off. :D :D :D

IF YOU WANT QUITE, BUY A CAR. I'VE HAD THREE DIESELS, NOT ONE MUFFLER LASTED MORE THAN THREE DAYS BEFORE I CUT IT OFF AND

STRAIGHT PIPED IT. I LOVE IT ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU PASS A F OR C

TRUCK AND THEY JUST GOT TO TRY TO CATCH UP. :-laf

Rob, had fun going for a ride & drive in your '02 HO tonight :)

I like the Gear Vendors unit, I think I could get used to one of those. 1750 or so RPM at 80 :D

Your ETH sounded just how I rememberd my '01 ETH . . . pretty noisy :p It seemed quieter on the passenger side for some reason. You got a nice truck though.

Vaughn, Not a problem! hope you learned something about gearvendor, there a sweet set up as you noticed. Helps with the milage as you saw. Your right the sound is quieter from the passenger side    Not sure why thou    seeing as that was probably the first time I ever was in the passenger seat :-laf :-laf :-laf
