Upgrade from OEM Receiver Hitch

I tried 3 times to tell him..........

I have a Reese 15,000 5th wheel hitch in my truck. The locking lever has two positions. One position allows some side to side swivel, the other position locks the side to side swivel.

Which position should be the "normal" position? Why would you use one position vs the other?

Thanks,

Bobby

Reese Hitch

Bobby,

I think I may have the same hitch as you. My is a Reese Trailboss 15K. I've been using is for about a year and a half and have found that it can only be locked, in the rigid postion on level ground. If not perfectly level, it will not engage.

I was told that the hitch is supposed to be a little more stable (less rocking back and forth) with the lock engaged. I really haven't noticed any difference with it locked, or unlocked. Maybe someone else has more info/experience... ;)

The locked position is for towing down the road. The unlocked position is for off camber situations such as uneven campsites so you can hook/unhook easier. If you've never struggled with a fixed hitch binding against the pin consider yourself fortunate. :)

EKarr is right, but my point was that if your not perfectly level, it is almost impossible to engage. You have to tow out to a level area and then engage it... :)

FYI: Reese is discontinuing the Trailboss and bringing out a newer version. My supplier tells me they are going to be about 50 bucks more... ... ... ... . Oh well... .....
