When DEF equipped trucks are in active regeneration is it harmful to shut down the engine? My 2016 2500 goes into regen occasionally. I only know its doing it because instantaneous mpgs drop, and I smell the odors others have mentioned. The tailpipe on shutdown is hotter then H***. This morning coming to work it was regenerating for the last 15 miles. I shut down and could smell the burnt rubber smell. Will it go back into regen when I re-start this afternoon. TIA

My truck must be pretty sneaky, I've had it a couple of years now and I've never noticed a regen. About 95% of my driving is loaded highway driving. Maybe that's the difference.

How many miles on your 2016 and do you have any idea how many regens it's done?

I have 2,200 miles on it. I have only noticed 2 regens since new and I noticed both during city driving (the odor and a drop in instantaneous mileage were the indicators). Its possible I have had other regens while towing on the highway and didn't notice it. At higher speed and not stopping at red lights a doubt you would smell the odor. (AC on, windows closed etc) BTW Bob 4x4 it did go into regen again on the way home. I estimate it was in regen yesterday about 30 total miles of driving. This morning while driving in the mpgs picked up and were normal again. I sure wish there was an indication on the dash during regen.

I have had mine for 2 months and 3500 miles and do not know if and when it has done regens! Other than coming home for the movies yesterday I did notice what looked like much lower mileage than what it has been doing with only 50 miles on this fillup. Of course, the night before I showed off to friends and started it with smart phone app as we were getting ready to leave a restaurant and it idled for 10-15 minutes in the parking lot.

If you ever get an Edge Insight (Reader only, not programmer) it will show when the truck is in regen.

Never noticed a thing, I have 10K on it now. One thing I did notice is the inside of my tailpipe is not spotless clean. It's not black but more dirty looking. My 11 HO looked clean oil 65K.

I've never really been able to tell when mine is in regen. A few times at shut down i could really here the tail pipe tinking and popping during cool down but that's it. My 2010 would regen and I could tell no matter what I was doing with it. It would have more grunt and develop a howl in the exhaust note. My 14 is seamless.

My new Kubota tractor is Tier 4 which includes a DPF. It has an indicator light dash when it goes into regeneration. I can watch a bar graph on the instrument panel's electronic display while its in regeneration as the DPF restriction goes down. When it gets to zero, it shuts off regeneration which is usually between 15-20 minutes, depending on engine speed and load. If it weren't for the indicator on the dash, I wouldn't know it is in regeneration since it is seamless.

On my Edge insight, I set up an alarm to sound when the post-DPF EGT sensor exceeds 1000F so I'll know when DPF regeneration is occurring. It works quite well.

I have seen them regen at 900 but it will climb with a little time.

You're right of course, but I just wanted to make sure to avoid the possibility of any nuisance alarms.

When it hits 1000F, you KNOW it's definitely in DPF regen!
