Regeneration questions

Is the process of regeneration only triggered by driving conditions or is it triggered by information from sensors?

Also is the process varied because of the exhaust temperature i. e. more fuel to increase heat and once it achieves desired temperature fuel is reduced to maintain heat?

Next is the end point determined by sensor readings or just duration/time of the event?
