Saw this today on one of the news sites here outta Colorado Springs... looks like the "Revenue Boys" want thier money!!!

------

Montana has no sales tax. If you're making a huge purchase, like a recreational vehicle, the sales tax can reach thousands of dollars. That savings was enough to lure the owners of 122 RVs to use false Montana addresses to register their vehicles. The Colorado Department of Revenue caught up with them.

The residents have been billed a total of $2. 7 million for unpaid sales taxes, penalties and interest.

The Department of Revenue and attorney general's office teamed up on the criminal and civil cases. Twelve people in Jefferson, Boulder, Arapahoe and Weld counties

received deferred sentences after pleading guilty to felony tax evasion charges. They were ordered to pay restitution, register their RVs in Colorado and perform community service.

repost...dang it :)

CRUD... this was posted yesterday by Harvey B... musta skipped right over it when I did my "quick search"...

Colorado Convicted RV Owners Using Montana LLC Tax Dodge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was a recent discussion here in the TDR forum about registering an RV in MT using a MT LLC tax dodge. Those considering or advocating this idea might want to read the following article pulled from an RV industry news site:

Colorado Convicts RV Owners for Tax Evasion

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

State authorities brought civil and criminal charges against Colorado residents who registered recreational vehicles worth up to $400,000 in Montana to avoid local taxes and registration fees.

The Denver Post reported that the offenders registered recreational vehicles only in Montana, which does not charge sales taxes on motor vehicles and has low registration fees. But Colorado residents must pay sales taxes and registration fees in Colorado, said Mark Couch, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Revenue.

The Colorado Attorney General's Office and the revenue department working together obtained misdemeanor tax evasion convictions against 12 people living in Jefferson, Boulder, Arapahoe and Weld counties, Couch said.

They each received deferred sentences, and were also ordered to pay restitution to the state, register their recreational vehicles in Colorado and perform community service, Couch said.

The Revenue Department also took civil action against other Colorado residents who owned recreational vehicles registered in Montana. The state billed 122 recreational vehicle owners $2. 7 million in unpaid sales taxes, penalties and interest. "

The only legal way out residence in both states. I have a farm in Missouri and a residence in California. Then take your pick. My insurance company does'nt give a darn since the prems are about the same. Even tho they say where the vehicle is garaged at.

As I recall your state of residence is the state that you live in the longest for the tax year, and No you can't live in both the same length of time. Its got to be one or the other. I also own a "FARM" in Oregon. But live in California I pay the taxes that our due. I also declare all my online purchases that I am not charged for, and pay the taxes due. I do use the services of the state so why try to cheat my neighbors and have them pay my way. Call me dump or stupid but why cheat and lie. Just my 2 sense

I wouldn't call you dumb or stupid, I'd call you responsible and honest. Those RVers in Colorado are wishing they had taken a page out of your book right about now.

Or have a corporation in the state, then they can not do anything. My family has a business and the "corporation" is in Nevada. Plus paying 20k plus in tax on a motorhome is crap, nothing like being taxed to death so our prez can blow it!!

Prez, hell it's all of the politicians. The problem is our system now encourages and breeds corrupt leaders with zero concept of what their constituency need. I live in Colorado and get P***** when my tax bill hits for. The Jetta, The Truck, The Harley, The Subaru, The 5th Wheel, the Willy's and the House. But guess what I pay it and then try and vote for people that understand that I also need my money... #@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

That's why I kinda like Doug Bruce... may have pi$$ed some people off in Capitol in Denver... but at least he "tells it like it is" def not PC...

NEXT THING YOU KNOW??

The Feds will be cracking down on the DPF deleters. #@$%! Boys you better be keeping your pipes.

I thought all "money bills" had to start in the House of Representatives. By the way, did I see where McCain had zero "pork barrell" spending? Mark
