May Madness 2002

May Madness will be held in Pahrump and Las Vegas, Nevada for 2002. This will be the eighth annual Western Regional event for the Turbo Diesel Register. Other brands of diesel trucks will be welcome in addition to Cummins powered Dodges, to “challenge” our Rams at May Madness. The Pahrump Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge dealership, Rick Peet, has enthusiastically agreed to help with registration, display trucks, etc. The dealership has influence with the City of Pahrump, so we anticipate that they will “open the city” to the music (noise?) and aroma (smell?) of #2 Diesel fuel doing what it does best in our Rams. The dealership is just off Highway 160, between Oxbow and Basin ( coming from Las Vegas, turn right on Oxbow).

It looks like MM02 will be outrageous! How about mud bogs, sled pulls, dirt circle track time trials, drag racing, dyno testing, plus all those "traditional" things like the Lake Mead cruise, show-n-shine, hall of gottahavits, tours of Diesel Dynamics and J&S Diesel. Rick Peet Dodge in Pahrump NV (about an hour out of Las Vegas) wants us to take over the whole town for the event! In case you haven't visited Pahrump in recent years, it has really grown and has top notch casinos, RV parks, etc. now. We are once again getting support from Cummins (and Dodge is back, too!). We hope to exceed the value of prizes from last year (which was somewhere around $8000) for the drawings at the banquet. By the way, the only winery in Nevada is the Pahrump Valley Vineyards. Death Valley is about an hour away. We will hold a golf tournament in Pahrump.

The event will be 5 days long, May 1-5, 2002. Moving the event up to the beginning of May will get us a bit cooler weather while still being May Madness to keep its tradition and to work around the timing of other TDR events. Pahrump has several advantages over Las Vegas for us Rammers. The proximity of many things we want to do in a small town will ease the stress of driving around. We are also able to add attractions that we couldn't easily do in LV. We now have the ability to conduct “dirt” events like the roundy-round time trials, mud bogs, and sled pulling. These things are BIG attractions at other TDR and related events such as the ones held in Tulare, CA, and Muncie, IN. There will be a few events in Las Vegas, but the scenic drive from Pahrump takes under an hour. The Vegas attractions are the tours of Diesel Dynamics and J&S Diesel (our Bosch authorized repair facility), and the Lake Mead dinner cruise. Drag racing will be held either at the Pahrump Valley Speedway or at the Las Vegas Speedway.

Lake Mead Cruises will give us a group rate of $36 for their two hour (6:30 to 8:30 PM) dinner cruise on Lake Mead, Wednesday May 1 and Thursday, May 2. We need a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 75 participants for this event per cruise, and relatively soon so we don’t get bumped by any other groups. To get this rate, you have to send the funds with your registration. They won’t accept individual payments at the group rate. We will have to pay them with one check (it will be issued from Rick Peet since you are making your individual checks out to Rick Peet Motor Co. ).

We will hold a Best Dressed Truck contest, have vendors in a Hall-of-the-Gottahavits, and hold technical seminars on popular issues such as power, maintenance, drivetrain upgrades, etc. The local Bosch shop, J&S Diesel, has offered to participate. Several vendors have also volunteered for these 20-minute seminars. The seminars will be technical, not merely sales pitches. Significant product features and advances will be presented.

Each participant will pay for individual dyno runs, boat cruise/dinner, entrance and participant fees at the race track, fees for museums, etc. That way you pay for what you want to attend, not for what you don't want.

For this event, there will not be a single host hotel or RV park. Pahrump is a relatively small town and many of the businesses there are anxious to accommodate us in any way they can. We have identified four hotel and RV park facilities. Terrible’s Lakeside RV Park and Casino has a lake, fishing, swimming, and 160 RV spaces (775-751-7770 or www.terribleherbst.com). It is a few blocks away from the other sites but has great amenities. Saddle West Hotel, Casino, and RV Park (800-433-3987 or www.saddlewest.com), Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Casino (775-751-6500) and Best Western Hotel and RV Park (775-727-5100) are also participating. Please identify yourself as May Madness participants when you make your reservations.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to register for May Madness 2002 early. We need to have an idea of how many will participate, so we can take care of deposits and reservations of equipment, time and space for activities.

Where will the show and shine be held and the hall of gottahavits? Is there anything other than the tours and poss. the drag racing that will be in vegas? Is the show and shine going to be in a park or in a garage again? Didn't care for the garage thing. the shade KILLS the look of the paint. Judges were looking at the trucks by flashlight!

This needs to be outside thats all there is to it.

Will be in Pahrump from the 28th to the 1st. Will let you know after that if we will be attending. We probably will.

As tall as you are, we'd know who it was, bag or not :)

I just realized... Our 15th anniversary is smack in the middle of it. Wonder if I could convince the wife to go on a jaunt down south for our anniversary celebration? I'm sure I could get at least an afternoon to see the fun...

Schedule???

Joe,

What is the rough schedule looking like for the events, discussion groups, or whatever. Which day is what planned?

I, like many others, may not make the whole enchilada, but part of it is better than none.

I haven't finalized the schedule yet but most of the stuff will be Thu-Sat. If you can't take off much work, plan on those days, or even just Fri-Sat. At least, I hope to work the schedule so those days have the most important/popular stuff.

Dyno days may be early or several days. Mud bogs etc. also have to be scheduled when we can get access.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHhh MAN!!!!!!!!!!! This looks way cool!!!!!!!! Count me in for sure. It's almost too good, this happening on the same weekend that I will be down in Vegas for the supercross on saturday. Oh fun. Where is the banquet? I seems a little spendy for dinner. What makes it so expensive?

Even the casinos have to charge for banquets. The party ties up a large room for the whole evening, so it is not like a crash-and-burn buffet where people stay for 1/2 hour.

Last year I had to do a lot of negotiating to get a good banquet for the price of $25. ya see, I wanted to keep the cost the same as John Holmes' show in Minden/Carson City, and lo and behold, he later told me the banquet was heavily subsidized by Dodge. That is why he could charge only $25 to the participants. Anyway, I got it done, but if you ever put on a show, you will find out how much things cost and how hard it is to keep the rally prices down. This year, Rick Peet Motors is helping me get good deals in Pahrump. They know we could go back to Vegas--we were treated very well at Arizona Charlies. Rick etc. want us to have a great time in Pahrump.

Ok, I get it. Thanks- What is going to be going on at the banquet? What kind of food? I am going to have a hard time convincing my friends to fork up 25 bucks for dinner. Help me talk them into it. Thanks

Chris

First, one banquet is part of the registration. Second, if you want a chance at the probably $8000 in prizes to be raffled off at the banquet, you better plan to attend. That's about how much we gave away last year. Thanks to Cummins and our other vendors for their generosity

The banquet is an integral part of MM and the camaraderie is not to be missed, imho. And, fwiw, I used to be skeptical of the price also.

Thinking seriously about coming down now....

How quick do I have to make up my mind? :D There was talk of planning a convoy down from Alberta and surrounding areas-but we're still kinda working on that. I brought that thread back up to the top now so hopefully we'll get it figured in the next couple of days..... but I need to leave myself enough holiday days to make the Stampede Diesel Fest up here... .

Thinking it would be cool to meet some more TDR members-and seeing as I've never crossed the 49th  and I'm not getting any younger I'd best do it before they seal us off!
