Thinking about switching to Toyo Open Country 285 tires. Anyone have any complaints or second thoughts about the switch after the fact? How about the up-side? Still have stock Michelins on and want alittle more off road traction for hunting season . Did your fuel MPG change any? Good or bad let her rip! :p

I am currently running 33X12. 5X17 Pro Comp A/T's. That was a great switch from the michelins except for the low load rating these tires have. These have a lot more wet road traction, I thought the michelins were terrible on wet roads. The Pro Comps have lasted about 34K, they will be replaced probably this week or next. I was considering the 285 Toyo A/T's but want something a little bigger. I think I am going to get the 295 Toyo M/T's, I thought about the 35's but I am concerned about the power I will lose do to the big tires.

285s and 3. 73 not the best combo for heavy towing.

You think thats bad, you ought to try 295s & 3. 5s :{ It works OK as long as your not towing too heavy & don't wanna use OD while towing.....

Went from the stock BFG's to the Open Country A/T's. Tires are a little squishy. Taking me a while to get used to them. Not sure on the mileage yet, but have a trip to Houston this week. So I will get to check that.

I like the way they look. Fill the wheelwell better.

Have the Toyo 285 load range D. . They are a little "squishy" and take a bit to get used to , but Toyo is supposed to come out with the Open Country AT's in 285 with a load rating of E sometime later this year. October I think.

I just wore out a set of 285 BFG AT’s and just bought 285 Toyo AT but had them siped. I have 3. 73 and tow 10,0o0 lbs , no issues. Mileage is about the same. I think the BFG’s may be a better snow tire and that is why I siped the Toyos. I switched to Toyo’s for a hazard and mileage warranty, E rating and I had a “radial pull” situation with the BFG that sure enough, went away with the Toyo’s. Time will tell. I would not hesitate from going to the 285. All from Les Schwab (they are slow... ..... though)

I have run several sets of 285s on three third gens, all with 3. 73 gears and automatics. I have towed heavy with all three trucks and never had any issues at all. The size increase is 4-5%, the rpm drop on the highway is about 100 rpm. I didn't notice any milage change, I suspect what you lose in town you make up for on the highway. To say 285's and 3. 73s are not the best combo for towing is completely baseless.

I've now had the Toyo 285 Load Range E's for about 6 months or so

Anyhow, I like them so far. They are not squishy. They are good in-town, on the highway, or towing. Mileage hasn't noticeably changed either. The only weather in which I haven't tried them out yet is snow. No regrets so far!

TDR member RankRam has the Load Range E's, tows a huge toy hauler, and loves them too. He has them siped also.

I have around 1,000 miles on my Toyo AT 285'sThey are Load range E. I also had them siped for better snow and ice traction. They replaced the stock Michelins which just sucked in the snow and ice or even just wet roads. I hope this winter will be much better with these. When I drove out of Les Schwab they had 50lbs air in them and they felt squishy. I increased the air to 60lbs and now they feel great. So far i like them and they do look a lot better on the truck size wise and the more aggressive tread pattern looks nice too. Time will tell how they wear.

No regrets with mine. I have 59,000 miles on a set of Sumitomo HTR Sport LT285/75R/16's, load range D/3305-lbs@65psi. They are on an 01,quad4x4 w/six spd. and 3. 55's. If pure acceleration is important, then, yes there is a difference from stock, however I like the cruise rpm, it is mostly a daily driver. When I tow, no problems with sway or feeings of being underpowered. When I replace them I will stay with the size, but will change style/brand. The rounded face seems to wear uneven, even with frequent rotation. Really I should have no complaints, since the overall mileage is great. I just like a more flat face tread, they seem to wear more even on 4x4.

had town / country 245-16 on 94 truck. changed to 265 wild country and lost 1. 7 mpg. had 3 flats with 6ply. changed to Toyo M55. lost another 1/2mpg. but i liked the tire for off road work. payed $700 for four. i now have an 06 i would like M55 price is like $1000. the wider the more traction the more fuel. i keep being told by tire companies you need E range on diesel trucks.

I am currently running Toyo'S Open Country 285/70/R17E and I'm not all that impressed with them. The reason why I bought them was because they have a 3,750 lb rating per tire. That is a very impressive feature for this size of tire. I am running them a 75 psi because I tow heavy trailers (41' gooseneck and a 33' gooseneck). They are not squishy at all but the wear of them is poor. I only have 15,000 miles on them and I can only seen getting another 10,000 miles out them and thats running them bald. I am already having traction issues with them in the rain (could be my heavy foot :) ) I didn't notice any milage difference from them directly. Overall I think that they are a good tire if you rotate them alot.

Thanks for the quick responses. You guys gave me alot of good points to ponder before buying another set of tires. I like the looks of the over size tires, but was not sure about the towing issues, sounds like the Michelins really suck during the winter. Looks like its going to be Toyo 285's for the hunting trip.

Thanks TDR guys! You rock :D

i have those tires love them good traction all around no loss in fuel mileage they have to be rotated about ever other oil change. will buy again

I have BFG A/T TA 285s. I like them a lot - they are much better in the rain and snow than the stockers. I didn't see any real perfomance or mileage sacrafice. The dealer recalibrated my speedometer for a minimal fee. The only downside for me is the BFGs will be lucky to see 40,000 miles as they are pretty soft. The fronts wear fastest due to all of the weight up there.

I would not say I regret it, but they will not be my tire of choice in the future. I put on the BFG AT KO for my second set on my 2004. I got 1/3 less miles out of them than any other tire I have put on a Dodge in the last 350,000 miles. They also were very rough. I suspect they were out of round from the start. I also could tell that the mileage was 1 to 1. 5 mpg less than the Ricksons with the Hankooks .

I run the 285's in the a/t ko. They work well even with 373's and an auto grossing 23k. This is my normal towing wieght.

They also ride and handle better than the stock bfg crap that came on the truck.

I ran that tire in a C load believe it or not for over 30K when it first came out on the same truck you just sold (03 SO) I don't know how heavy your 03 Prowler 25 ft is but they did real nice towing our 25ft 6K TT in the mountains and open road as well, mine was 3. 73. They were quiet with excellent winter snow traction. I didn't like the fact they picked up small rocks easily but other than that they did well at 50 psi and rotations every 7500.

If I bought again I would go for the E's but now I am too spoiled with the Goodyear Silent Armour's I just put on the Jeep so I am keeping fingers crossed for an E in that tire for my 05 CTD. The 33" Dick Cepek's I don't like at all and hope they wear terribly for a reason to change.
