Well said Kev.

I agree, to see KAT, or any other member of the TDR, get a raw deal is upsetting. Obviously we all participate here to help eachother, and that is whats makes the TDR so great.

As far as the Fosgate's being a good sub or not, I think we look at things from a different point of view. It sound like you too are a high end audiophile, and although you and I know there are better subs out there for a few more dollars, KAT shouldn't think the subs he went with are a bad choice. I have been very happy with the Fosgate's I have installed and have yet to have one "blow up". It seems likely that they would be more proen to failure than others because they are likely not built of the same quality, and hence a lower price.

Just a matter of opinion on the Fosgates. Obviously you have not had as good of luck or been as happy as I have with them. No big deal. (FTR the shop where I worked sold, Orion, Rockford Fosgate, Soundstream, Eclipse, and Pioneer)

KAT,
Just curious what other brands of equipment does the shop sell?

Ryan

Kat,
I have SR-5. 2 Morels in the doors. They are very nice with a 3" voice coil in the midrange/woofer, and a textile dome tweeter for sweet high frequencys. I made spacers for the door frame and then a carpet covered speaker mount that attaches to the outside of the doors panels. The tweeters are aimed at the driver. behind the seat is a box that runs the length of the cab with Vifa P17WG-09-04 6. 5" woofers and Vifa D26NC47-06 1" Textile dome tweeters on each end for rear fill. Madisound designed and built the crossovers. There are 2 10" Madisound Sledgehammer subs in the same box. Rockford Fosgate amps drive the front door speakers and Subwoofers the Alpine head unit drives the rear fill speakers. I would highly recommend Madisound.com for speakers. The stuff they sell is light years ahead of the usual autosound stuff - Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, etc... I used the "Subwoofer Design Toolkit" software to get the box design right. It is available on the WWW for about $27

<font color=blue>Yeah... as you see from my bitter attitude towards Fosgate, I had nothing but bad luck from their subs and their customer service.

Wow this thread exploded.

I'll try to post the part numbers later from work.

The Amp has a lil peace of paper inside "from" RockFord Fossgate that states its rated at 534 watts, I dunno what Ohms or configuration, I'll find out today.

I'll try to reread this thread from work and answer questions later... ...

One of the reasons I let this shop do it was for 90 days I can return any of the items for full credit, and upgrade or downgrade if I want to.

That was the "major" selling point. I know RockFord makes good amps, and I figured their subs are "adequate" for my needs, like Kevin said i am not looking to win any competions #ad
To be honest before I visited the shop I had thought I wanted Kicker, but not sure if they sell them I'll have to ask. I'll ask again why he said go with 3 10" instead of 2.

Thanks for the replies, be a while before I get it all thoroughly read and answered..... hope its a slow day at work today #ad
Hehe.

Kat, what "by-nines" are you using? In my experience, you get better sound out of using a round 6 to 6 1/2" co-ax speaker. Of course this all depends on what brand you choose. I just about swear by MB Quart. The crisp sound of those tweeters is unmatched. I haven't heard a system that had the tweeters in the A-pillars, but I am told that they don't image very well. They are too far from the other speakers in the doors to really image properly. If there are tweeters on the 6X9's, you should probably just disconnect the factory ones. Wait, are you using an amp for you mids and highs? That will give you better sound quality and "loud stuff". If you aren't, don't worry about the pillars.

<font color=blue>Well the speakers are svc. I know the amp is 360. 2 I think its just the Punch not the Power, I still have to look, I just saw 360. 2 on the box. I had to rush to work so I sain't figured much of it out yet, the box is supposedly 3 cu ft.

The head unit is Kenwood KDC-x717. (this one doesn't play MP3's).

For now it sounds good just because it is new but I'll have to tinker with it once I figure out the radio and what adjusts what.

Thanks for the info sa far... .

So they $crewed you on the MP3 deck did they???

IMHO I'd take the I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER back and go to a reputable shop that knows what they are doing

I'm not meaning to have a bad attidute about this... but you sounded pretty excited about the deck that plays MP3's. If that's what you want why settle for less?

Actually they didn't, I spaced it earlier I am trying a deck that doesn't play MP3's first because I liked the style. The $425 MP3 player I don't like the display much, so I am gonig to play with this deck and if I don't like it I will get the $600 MP3 player put in. I'll get the model numbers for the 2 mp3 players, mine doesn't play them tho. Like I said earlier they will give me full credit on any product for 90 days.

Sorry for the typo, its been a crazy day. The one decent thing they did was the store managar came and picked me up.

I haven't even gotten to read the radio manual because its been hectic at work... . so take me a while to figure out if I like it or not and to set everything up to my listening style.

first impression tho is it sounds great with my style of music. We'll see once I get to spend more time playing with it... ... still prolly goto Kicker Subs in a different box. We''ll see.

IMHO then Kicker is what you should go with. Don't go with another brand cause some guy making $10/hr seems to know what he is talking about. You have probably done your homework and know what you want. So go with what you want and not with what this guy wants to sell you. BTW. . kicker does make a pretty awesome sub IMO

Just as an FYI, Crutchfield is selling the Kenwood Exelon Z919 (which plays MP3s) for $550... so don't let them over charge you if you decide to get it.

I had 8" kicker subs in my last truck (a regular cab Sonoma) and they were great speakers - with the style of music you listen to I'd agree with the guys above that 8" subs are plenty. With an 8" sub you'll hear more of the tonal quality of the bass instead of just the vibration, with the long throw of larger subs the sound waves may actually be past you so everyone outside the truck will get to listen to your bass! If you really want CLEAN sound you'll need to amplify the front speakers as well as tune, tune, tune the system. With a properly tuned system you will hardly ever actually hear bass from your sub's - they should only be taking over for the super low bass notes that your regular speakers can't handle. Without amplifying your front speakers when you crank it up you'll get distortion from those speakers because they won't be able to keep up with the subs. I went totally insane when I bought my Sonoma at the radio shop, close to $3500 and 3 days later I had the best sounding stereo I'd ever heard (home or car). I'd never spend that much on a setup again though, I have my amplifiers and my subs sitting next to me to go into the Ram when I get the time and $$. BTW, I had all Kenwood components in my truck except for the subs because Kenwood subs suck.

<font color=blue>Thanks, for the info... . I must say I do like 10"s over 8"s just because that my "preference", it will give me the best "all around" performance in my opinion.

Ok heres some part numbers and prices.

  • Kenwood Excelon X717 - $400
  • Punch 360. 2 amp - $300
  • 3 RFZ2810 10" Subs - $200
  • Box for truck - $175
  • 200 watt 6x9 for door (Emerson?) - $75

I think thats everything I got that I can recall off the top of my head.

The amp is only powering the subs, the head unit is powering the other speakers. The 1" tweeters still on the pillar.

Now I gotta figure out how to operate the dang radio... ... . #ad

I've been trying to decide what do in my club cab for a while now. I've looked at putting a box under the rear seat, but hate to lose the space. Was thinking about the JL audio center seat box too, but I'd like to at lease see one first. Don't really want to upgrade the whole system right away, was thinking about putting in some subs and runing the amp off the line level inputs, and putting bass blockers on the other speakers for now.

I built two custom boxes for my Blazer that fit between the door post and the fender well that each hold two 4 ohm 8" RFZ's (the cheap Fosgates), and stick out about 3" from the side panel. They are wired in parallel and powered by a Punch 200a1 amp, that replaced two old series 1 Fosgates. Sounds much better now. Only bummer is it just doesn't sound the same in the summer with the soft top on (or off).

As for the train unloading place, I think its near I76 and Hwy 85, which is also pretty close to Rocky Mountain Cummins.
