I tried moving my lift pump back by the tank. I used a brand new one from cummins. It made a low pitched hum that drove me crazy. The noise was the same at idle or cruising. You couldnt hear it standing outside the truck, but in the cab with the windows up it was bad. It wasnt really loud it was just annoying, after about 10 minutes it made me want to jump out the window. So I'm back to the stock location, I did install the bigger banjos, maybe that will help.

Did you have the pump isolated from the frame or bolted straight to it? My pusher pump is mounted by the tank and it's bolted to a bracket with 3 rubber grommets and then I sandwiched a piece of bicycle inner tube between the bracket and the frame. I can barely hear the pump running at idle and can't hear it at all once moving.

When I relocated my lift pump I used 1 inch thick rubber and bolted the lift pump bracket to the rubber pad. Made sure to tighten them enough to recess then into the rubber. Then bolted the rubber block to the frame and PRESTO, quiet pump. :)

I used sway bar bushings to isolate the pusher pump,they are about 1" thick, they work great,and are free to me ,i had a few laying around. I used them on both sides of the bolts that way the lift pump bracket was totally isolated from the frame,if you only use them behind the mount vibration will be transfered thru the bolts,so use them on both sides.

Carter makes a mounting kit for the pump with some rubber bushings for the mount. This is what came with my PDR pusher pump setup. No vibration in my setup.

I did try to isolate it. I put rubber washers between the bracket I made and the frame, then rubber washers between the lift pump mounting studs and the bracket. I had a buddy under the truck while I was sitting in it at idle and had him grab the pump with both hands to try to dampen the vibrations. The pitch changed slightly but not much. I didnt notice the noise on the first test drive but then it was like my ears locked in on the sound and then I couldnt ignore it. I dont think I'm sensitive to noise, I do drive a Cummins with no muffler, but it wasnt a cool noise like a turbo whine.

It sounds like pump slid down a little bit and the bolts that you put through the bushing contacted the frame. Now the frame is just a sounding board to let you know the pump is running.

Carter Quiet Pack

Besides the rubber grommets that Carter sells with the pump that installs in the supplied bracket, they also have an isolator kit. The part number is 1814-U and they call it a “Quiet Pack. ” I got mine from Enterprise (1-740-246-6329). You can see them in a top view to the pusher pump set-up I made. See the “Truck Pictures” link below.

Isolator Kit?

Does the isolator kit include new, longer bolts to mount it to the frame? Are they the same size as the ones that came with the pump and mounting kit? TIA

My 2nd lift pump was a Carter HP pump that was VERY noisy. It sounded like a little chainsaw. The stock pump was not that noisy. The Mallory pumps (not recommended) were not that noisy. I now have the Holley pump. It is not half as noisy as the Carter 4601HP. The Carter sounded like it was chewing itself up. Maybe it was, it only lasted 5 months. :-{}
