Just installed new gauges and discovered that the fuel pressure is only 7 psi at idle and dropping to about 3 at WOT. The VP and LP were replaced under warranty just 5k miles ago. Now 1k milles out of warranty,Cummins says they will cover the cost of the LP, but the labor is on me. I figure that is about $300 to drop the tank. I didn't like it when they moved the LP to the tank, but it was that or pay the $3500 repair bill out of my pocket at the time. I don't want to throw more money away.

What will it take to go back to some sort of external pump? Would I have to drop the tank anyway and remove the old pump or can it just ride along?

I haven't verified the accuracy of the gauge yet, but will before going further.

The gauge is hooked to the side of the VP44, any chance that would give a different reeding than other locations.

Ideas?

I jumped the gun. I thought this problem might be unique to the modified system, but after looking at the 3rd generation forum I see that it is a common problem still. The common fix seems to be a FASS or FASP. I guess I'll take a look at these. I would like a system that can be easily repaired on the side of the road.

I would also recommend looking into one of the many aftermarket solutions for the lift pump issue. There are many options out there. I’ve been running a FASS on my ’01 since around 19K. Personally, I’ve been very satisfied with the unit.

I saw the same problem last week on a friends truck, he just got it back from the dealer for a VP and LP replacement and they retro fited in the tank but his pressure was only 7psi at idle and 0psi at wot soo. . we are putting on a Fass system with the pick up tube in the tank.
