Relocating to Utah (what about rust???)

I've got a question,



I'm from Michigan, stationed in North Carolina. In Michigan cars are shipped from the maker with "rust option" They pre-rust the cars so that they all are rusted, regardless of year, make, etc... After spending 5 years in NC, where there IS no rust, I'm feeling a little spoiled. Now I'm wondering about my move to Utah. Does anybody live up near Salt Lake City or Odgen and can tell me what I could do to my truck to help prevent body cancer?



I know that there were a few years that GM wouldn't warr. the vehicle's work if you put undercoating on them, I'm just wondering what the situation is with D/C.

Corey, the biggest factor causing rust is constant humidity combined with road salt from the winter. You don't need to worry about a thing in Utah. Humidity is close to non-existent most of the time and very little salt is used in the winter. If you do drive after the road has been salted, just get to the car wash as soon as you can. You'll be surprised when you get to Utah. Late 70's vehicles still look good and no rust.

Many people have their vehicle undercoated with a tar like substance. That helps to prolong the life of the body and reduces noise in the cab. Here in Salt Lake, they do salt the roads after a snow storm, but the storm is very short lived and the roads are dry 360 days a year. Rust is not really a problem here. Just like the comments from wyosteve said. Just make it a point to have your buggy cleaned often year round and you shouldn't have a problem. Most of the gas stations have car washes attached to the side or rear of the station. The largest problem in Utah are the chips you get in the front end of the vehicle. There is so much small debris on the road and you sometimes find a rock chip in the windshield. You will enjoy Utah, just watch out for the drivers. They rank up there with Boston.

Biggest problem in Utah is the red mud in the southern parts. Looks like rust and is almost as hard to remove.

Well I don't think I'll beable to run through car washer thingie. I've got dual whip's on the side view mirrors, the car wash will rip them off. But I have a pressure washer I can do it at home also.

The car washes at the service stations are high pressure washers. Nothing comes in contact with your car. They are not the most efficient cleaners, but they take most of the salt and grime away. Yea, I know about the red dirt in Southern Utah. That stuff is like a cancer, really tough to get off. Wants to be a coating so bad. You have to have the vehicle detailed, where they actually scrub it off.

With out rust what will the body shop people do. But if you wash your truck it will last in utah for a very long time. I had a old ops . bad word CHEV. I keep for 14 years and had no rust in it. The dodge still looks great . Welcome to salt lake just rember to keep it clean, ha ha. .

i worked on the shuttle program in the late 80's - post challenger. i lived in ogden. very nice town. check out canyon cove apts in at the mouth of the canyon. nice state as well. scott.

Like the others have stated, the secret is to keep the salt washed off, they don't have to lay down salt too often but when they do they put it down heavy. I have lived here 21 years now and have never had a car rust on me, wait maybe thats because I don't keep them long enough. hehehe

I don't know what these guys are talking about!! The city/county keeps the roads VERY well salted. The time that it is a problem is during a storm and about 3 or 4 days after. I just wash mine once a week. There are good periods where the roads are dry, but they are ofted wet and salty. The thing that I hate the most is when the snow is melting and I run through a stream of salty water and it gets my freshly washed truck all salty again. I take my truck to Bishoffs, and they have wd-40 like stuff that they spray on the undercarrage that supposedly helps prevent rust. I think the biggest protection against rust is a coat of wax. At that car wash they have a pretty good spray on wax for the rest of the body, and it makes the water bead up just like a hand wax does. Hopefully that is providing somewhat of a barier to the salt.

The road crews are using mag-cloride for the most part around here. It goes on wet before the snow falls, and is activated by the moisture. I think that is not as prone to cause rust.

after living in Michigan for 23 years, I had hoped that I'd be done with rust! Looks like lots of car washes for me in the future. As far as the car washes, I'm glad that they offer the touchless ones. As long as they do a good undercarriage wash...

Last year at the first Utah Dyno days we started a multi brand diesel club. We will be having another dyno days some time in late april or early may.

Where did you get your pump timed at? I'm needing to get the timing set on my truck, but didn't want to pull the truck apart just to put in the KDP tab and not get it timed at the same time... (Thats a lot of "times") As far as the Dyno days, I'd be interested. I know that things are going to be HECTIC when we get out there. Moving into an area I've never been & trying to buy a house... This could get interesting. I just started getting my paperwork out to a lender out there. I hope to have a house picked out and paperwork finished with in a month.

Maybe the solution used by UDOT is harmless, but I usually wash the undersides and the white scum off the paint before putting the truck in the garage..... now, if it is freezing outside, that is not possible without creating an ice sculpture. So... . I wait. So far my '94 Isuzu trooper has shown no signs of rust and I treat it the same way. Don't sweat it... ... Just enjoy the scenery and when you get a chance... move South to Cedar or St. George

Corey I got mine timed by DDD(Doctor Diesel joe Donnelly) when I was down for the Sema Show. We have a local guy that is a dealer for DD named Ken Jones here in Ogden that can get you fixed right up.
