hey folks,

i am finding that accessing the fuel filter for routine changes is becoming more and more of a chore. i must be getting old! does anyone out there run a remote fuel filter or know of a first gen specific kit?

cheers,

roy

Roy,

I run a pre-filter on the '92, but I kept the factory filter as well. The base for the factory filter has the fuel heater and the water trap and drain is in the bottom of the filter. I don't know what it would take to relocate all that. I have never investigated it. With the pre-filter, I commonly go 25k between filter changes, so that is an improvement.

My 92 had a remote fuel filter kit on it when I got it. I love it.

I have heard of one by Prime-Loc and mine looks like it might be one of theirs, but it has no name on it.

I did an internet search and found one at prime-loc.com for the 1st Gens.

ken,

thanks for the tip. i checked out prime loc's website. i noticed there is a dealer not too far from me, so perhaps i'll check them out.

cheers,

You can always plumb a Racor unit ahead of the engine someplace. That's what is usually on the marine setups.

I see them on ebay all the time.

A Racor 500 would be more than large enough. You can get elements in either 2, 10, or 30 micron.

Just another way to go.

thanks jay,

if you don't mind, i have a couple of questions on the racor setup. i believe i have seen this setup before on a first gen. the net result appears to be two filters in series... the stock one still in it's original location and the racor mounted remotely somewhere. is this correct or does the racor unit replace the factory unit?

if the factory unit does stay in place, how often does that filter need to be changed? does the racor do most of the job?

cheers,

roy

Roy,

Keep the factory filter and put the Racor ahead of it... between the tank and the factory filter.

You can do it two ways... .

Use the Racor as a "bulk" filter. . larger in micron rating to catch the larger stuff. I would recommend a 10 or 30 micron for this purpose.

OR you can use a 2 micron element in the Racor and rarely have to change the factory filter. (I think the factory filter is around 7 micron?) But if you do this you'll have to change the Racor more often.

Racor elements are about $8 to $10 retail I think... probably cheaper if you do some i net searching.

The Racor will trap all the water before it gets to the factory filter.

The racor are easy to use you can get dual or tri elements or single they are easy as hell to change. Depends on where you live what size of filter somewhere where they don't filter as well like up here in Alaska i use a 10micron primary and 2 micron secondary
