is it possible to have a remotestart/alarm installed on a 2006 mega cab? if so, which unit do you guys recommend? thanks... james :D

the factory option. I believe they have a factory remote start/security system for the newer trucks. Nice thing about the factory units, plug and play, and no bugs. You wouldnt have to hack into the wireing under the dash, and also if you have the grey key (security chipped key) it will still work, after market remote starts bypass this feature. Check with the parts counter at the dealership.

First off the 06 dont have the old keys. they are new with intergrated remotes. Second the factory setups SUCK!!!!!!!!! they have NO range (20 feet) and the remote starter only will run for 15 minutes. I set diesels to run for 40 minutes. As far as which company would I use, it is DEI all the way. I have installed EVERY manufacture on the market up to about 2 years ago and DEI has the lowest failure rate. For those that dont know DEI is Directed Electronics which owns everyone like VIPER, CLIFFORD, RATTLER, WASP, HORNET, VALET, PYTHON, SIDEWINDER, ETC... ... . My advice to you is have a professional installer do your truck. I am one and doing my alarm/start my 06 is going to take a minimum of 4-6 hours to do. If you want to know if your installer has the ability to do your truck just show your key to him and if he looks confused go somewhere else. Having ruined the first remote/key from a customers van I now know how to handle them. The remote/key has to be taken apart and the circuit board removed. Immediatly the circuit board needs to have a piece of electrical tape placed over the copper transponder coil. The coils wires are smaller than baby hair and will break even if touched by your finger and need to be covered instantly. The first one I took apart didnt survive being moved around during the install. Now they get taped instantly. Be prepared to pay for your install. There are many things that need to be done that most other vehicles dont need and arent included in pricing. Upwards of $400. is the norm for our trucks. If you want anymore info dont hesitate to send me your email and I will help as much as possible. Good luck.

I've got the Viper in my sig. Works great, had it for close to a couple yrs now.

Alarm doesn't go off in the middle of the night from loud noises or frosty windows (glass breakage sensors) like others I've had. Starter works from quite a ways away. On winter mornings after I shag my butt out of bed I grab my keys, start my rig and go take a shower, etc. When I park for the night, I turn my defroster on high so in the morning I've got a nice warm truck and no ice scraping of windows. Oo.

OEM remote start??

I've recently ordered a 2006 Laramie qc with EVERY option listed on the Dodge website save for the NAvigation radio and rear seat video. I spent alot of time making sure that I got everything I wanted and I even ordered the truck twice (missed on option the first go round). I never saw an option for remote start from Dodge, are you sure they offer that?

The remote start and exhaust brake are Dealer options, you can order it when you order your truck and add it to your price of your truck, but dealer installs

Does anyone have an ballpark figure what a dealer charges for the factory remote start? My dealer wants $500, a little steep, I think.

what about the fact i have a six speed? is it still possible? the unit would have to bypass the clutch switch... .

I have one on my 6 speed and did one for a friend, and I put one on my girlfriends 5sp Civic. However you must buy a MANUAL transmission remote starter. There are only a few manuf. making them due to the liablity factor. I've installed probably 100 or more remote starters and manuals are ALOT tougher due to the number of connections needed.

madmax4688 is right the factory ones SUCK and especially if it's a dealer installed item.

pm me if you have any more ??

Yup I carry about 4 different companies that will do standard vehicles. These units connect to the door trigger wires and you need to bypass the clutch override either permanent or temporary for the remote start to work. these unit see when you park the truck when you set the ebrake then will keep the truck running as you exit the truck. when you close the door the doors will lock and the truck will shut off. If you leave the truck alone until the next morning then it will start. If you open anydoor then the unit will not remote start assuming someone may have moved the shifter. Some morons actually put automatic remote starters in their standard vehicles and wonder why it just drove down the road and smashed that lexus (yes I've seen it). Theres only about 3 more wires to get but the clutch override sometimes takes awhile.

And earleb1 dont even bother looking into a dealer installed on a diesel it will only stay running for 15 minutes?! I set my gas cars to 25 and diesels to 40. And the $500 price is wwwaayyyy too high. My cousin just bought a Maxima and the dealer wanted the same amount and she said ok. I pratically jumped through the phone to choke her. She had me install it the next day for half that with all the goodies hooked up.

I have the Ultrastart. Very pleased, I returned the MOPAR unit. The Ultrastart also has a cool down mode. It transmits up to 2500' and the remote replaces the factory unit. The MOPAR unit I had required me to carry two remotes per key, the factory plus remote. Range was poor and I had other problems. It was not plug and play as I had hoped.

Either way I would go with an experienced shop that has installed on many 3rd gens. I drove out of state to have mine installed and they did an excellent job, soldered and heat-shrank everything.

Maybe the ones they are selling now are better. The MOPAR I bought in 2004 ( and returned) is actually made by Code Alarm.

Remote Start

My '06 has the factory remote start, didn't know it until they giving me the keys after I paid for the truck.

They missed the remote start and Jake brake completely. :D :--)

As for the factory remote start I have good range, I started the truck from the third floor of a hotel and the truck was at least 200' away. It waits for the heat cycle and fires the truck right up. I guess is the only draw back is the short  run cycle of 10 minutes. If you don't insert the key into the ignition and turn it to run the motor will stop with actuation of the brake or transmission selector.

Check out the Vipor system for q nice remote system. I had mine installed about two years ago and it has worked great. I like the long range that the remote has and the economics of a single AAA battery that last about 2 months. The display gives you a battery life indicator so you can change it before it gets so low that a warning beep starts. The display also lets you know what part of the vehical has been hit/opened to set off the alarm. Like most high end sysems, this unit is "smart" and will detect repeated alarms on the same sensor and shut down that sensor until the alarm is cycled on/off. I have a cap on the box of my truck and I added sensors to the side windows and rear gate. I use the aux button to turn on the led lights that I added to the interior of the topper. A shut down delay for the turbo cool down is a nice bonus with this system.
