Looked through archives on (remote start / alarm) systems and really felt there was not a clear winner among TDR users. How about some newer comments? I'm looking to purchase one for an 04 and would prefer to self install.

DEI (Now includes Avitar , CLIFFORD , And Viper) is THE only way to go if you want to incorporate security. If yoy just want remote start then there are a million options out there. I run a clifford G5 and I can hookup the laptop and set all my parameters at will (Alarm duration , See last 10 intrusions , system check , move functions around , set run time , auto off time (Turbo saver) , setup multipule events to one button etc.

I agree with TMTT. DEI is clearly the way to go. Their newer alarms have a built in turbo timer that is programable from 1-5 minutes (I think that is what the parameters are).

Still nothing good for us manual trans folks is there? (RE: remote start )

Wife's 95 van & my old 91 'burban both have remote start but not the diesel Ram :(

At least I have the remote ESPAR... . :D

David,

There are remote starters for manual transmission trucks. They have failsafe parameters built in so the truck is not accidentally started in gear. My friend just had one installed in his wifes manual transmission car and the good thing is it was not much extra to have this "special" manual transmission remote starter installed in comparison to the regular ones.

I'm sure someone has a link in front of them for the manufacturer of this starter, but I try to dig it up too.

I had a remote start/security system on my 2001 which I recently removed and will be installing on my 2004 very soon. The system was made by VIPER and I had zero problems with it. Remote start worked perfectly and of course I had many "wow" type compliments about it. The system is made to not start until the "wait to start" light on the dash goes out. As far as security goes, VIPER is a good name -- I don't know if it's "the best", but I know it's one of the better systems out there.

When I reinstall, I will be making the following changes: upgrading the siren so it's louder, upgrading the remote to notify me that the truck has started and whether or not the alarm is activated, and lastly I might upgrade the auxillary remote button to activate all four of my windows to go down to let the heat out before I get in

It depends on the alarm. Some tie into the wait to start light and others uses a timer therefore there is a set delay, say 15 seconds, between the time you puch the button to start the truck and the acutal cranking of the motor.

I cannot verify this from personal experience, but I have heard you cannot tap into the wait to start light on the 03/04 trucks. I guess it effects some of the other things that are on the same circuit as the wait to start light. On the newer trucks I am told you need to use a timer.

For the guys with manuals that can't pony up the money for an Espar, try

Design Tech

A good product for the price. If you get one, call the help center and talk to the head guy right away and save yourself a dozen phone calls. The door locks are kind of goofy, at least on my '02.

Also, the wait to start wire was easy, but there isn't an actual tach wire in the cab. You need to go under the hood to find one.

Bringing this back up to ask another question, thanks for the comments past comments.

Another name that keeps popping up is Bulldog. Is this also a DEI product or any one know anything about it?

99guy …. . p. s. but this is going on my 04

Bulldog Security is not affiliated with DEI. I have worked with the Bulldog products in the past and they are crap IMO. I will never own another Bulldog product due to my poor experience with the product and the company's customer service.

DEI makes products under a few different names Clifford and Viper are just a couple.

:) This is for all of you Einstein's,,, If you run the turbo saver all and every time??? The possibility of it being in gear is??? (DUH)

And if you cant remember that you left it in gear... This system is not for YOU!!!

The Viper 791XV is the way 2 go, it has worked for me flawlessly.

Any suggestions for installers. I've usually done business with 'Cartoys' and been very satisfied.

However, they will not touch an auto-start for a manual transmission. They'll install everything else but not the auto-start.

Any opinions on whether to leave the DC remote lock system in place and carry two remotes or have the DEI system replace it?

Thanks

i have the clifford remote starter and alarm, not the fancy one you can hook up to the computer but works for me. i have to say the range is awesome thru a brick wall and 500 feet roughly with a ton of metal everywhere starts everyday for me.

TMTT,

Where did you get your Clifford G5? And how much? I am looking for a good remote start and alarm. Mainly a good alarm, too many tools in the truck. So I need a pager for break-ins and the best range. I am between the Clifford G5 or the Valet 554R. Any opinions? Did you install it yourself?

Cary:cool:

If you are looking for a unit with a pager, the Viper 791 another very full featured system. Clifford also makes some nice units. Both compaines are owned by the same parent company, DEI, so they are probably made with the same components. If you are not doing the install yourself, I would shop based on what installer you feel most comfortable with.
