Hello to all. Anyone else have the remote start on the diesel from Mopar.

Having this feature on other cars over the years, I just had to have it installed on my new truck.

The question is: The truck will start, but usually stops after about 15 to

30 seconds, have any of you experienced this? Thought I would ask before

I start the 'dance' with my local dealer her in New Hampshire.

Temperatures have been in the high forties to the high twenties when this

happens. Is it crazy to have this on a diesel? Dealer was real happy to

install :)

Also, thanks to all for your passion about our diesel trucks. I came from two different Hemis and decided that the diesel was the way to pull that

fifth wheeler in the near future.

Any other thoughts you might have would be appreciated.

I have the MOPAR remote start on my truck and the first thing I need to ask is does your truck have the SENTRY security key, and if it does then did the dealer install the extra interface for the remote start unit that acts like the sentry to statisfy the system and let the engine continue to run after starting. Start a truck that has SENTRY keys and no having the special interface will start and run for a very short time and stop because of the security system not seeing a valid key.

Thanks for the reply. I would have to assume that it does have the right one as

they were aware that there were two different formats and were checking with

the sales department and looking at the keys, etc. Also, which is better, plug in

the engine (heater) or remote start? Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

Curious as most of the time the truck will be in the driveway close to electrical, but we will be in other parts from time to time without the electrical plugs, hence the need for the convenience (read lazy) of the remote start
 
Plugging it in is much better for the engine,batterys,and starter motor. You will also get heat a lot faster than using the remote start. Especially as it gets below 20 degrees or less. I usually plug in below 25-20 at nights. I still use the remote start when plugging in ,i still fire it up a minute before i leave to get the heat going,and trans fluid lubing the rear planetarys.
 
I added the MOPAR cold weather kit to my truck which adds electric battery blankets and a new harness that connects the battery blankets and the block heater on one plug. I also us a outdoor rated thermostat that can be set down to 30 degrees to trigger the heaters on. I then use the remote start to fire up the truck just before I head out to the door to go someplace.

Thanks for your reply, looks like you have the right solution for this. Do you have the Mopar part number for this kit or can you point me in the right direction (if it is not too much trouble). New Hampshire (like New York) can get mighty cold!!

The MOPAR part number is 82208721 and retails for $179. 00 it also has a front cover to restrict air flow into the engine compartment that mounts on the front of the radiator assembly and is hidden for the most part when you close the hood.
 
I have the MOPAR remote start and will most likely have the dealer remove it for a refund.



The truck will not remote start below 10 degrees F. The engine will turn over a few times and then disengage the starter. The blower and parking lights remain on becasue the truck 'thinks' it has started.



I called the dealer troubleshooting hotline and they recommended setting the 'tach learn' at 1200 rpm, which I did. (BTW, my dealer is lost on this one: I was their first diesel install. )



That solved the cold start problem but now the starter grinds if the remote is used above 20 degrees, or if the truck has been driven recently, even if it is below zero outside.



The tech support fellows are stumped. I even held the phone up while the truck started so the tech could hear the starter grind. I haven't ground a starter since I was 15 and the sound of my lovely Ram doing it is intolerable.



If you go the MOPAR route, ask your dealer if they have any diesel customers and if you can call them to see if they like it. Unfortunately, it looks like mine is going back for a refund.
 
Hello again to all. GOOD NEWS!! My dealer in New Hampshire has indicated that

the switch which is on the driver side towards the back under the hood is bad, and

that he had to remove it and send it to Dodge to get another one. In the interim,

he grounded from the switch and so far the starter is working. Waiting on the switch from Dodge to re-install and hope it wil be ok.

Ouch ..... on the starter grinding Dealer is Foss Motors in Exeter. Tentative hats

off too them (after the new switch is installed and it is still working) The switches

functure is to not allow the engine to start when someone is working under the hood.

I'm on my second remote starter system. And it is coming off tomorrow. Ultimate Electronics has given up after two different systems. The factory alarm goes off every time the door is opened and it seems to do it more when its cold outside, What are they missing? Truck is late 03. Thanks
 
I've got an Astro Start on mine and it works great now. It was hooked to the wait to start light when I had the trouble before. I made the installer go to the grids the same as my last few trucks and that solved my problem.



I've run remote starts for 12 years on my diesels and would not be without one. Even our cars up here just about all have them. Pluggin-in gets them started up here but @ -40 it does nothing for warm up. When it is cold it is better to give anything a bit of time for the fluids to circulate. Believe it or not they will warm up some if you leave your fan setting on low.
 
I'm a great believer in remote starts also. My wife has a Dodge Ram gasser and I got her a remote start for a past birthday. Hers is a Valet. I expected at least the same performance from the MOPAR unit for twice the money.



I'm going to go with the Utrastart. Code Alarm makes the MOPAR and it really isn't designed for diesels. This unit isn't performing and is going back to the dealer for a full refund. I don't recommend the MOPAR starter.
 
I have the Mopar Remote start. No problems with it except for the hood switch. I bet every one of those has gone or will go bad given the stories I have been hearing.



It has started the truck every morning, even when it got to -5. I didn't have the truck plugged in.

I was satisfied with mine after the tech suppport people at Code Alarm recommended solving the cold start problem by re-learning the tach limit at a higher rpm. It was only when I used the remote next to the vehicle that I realized the starter was still running after the engine started. Have you actually heard your truck start 'up close?" You may find the same thing is occuring.



It is only about one second of starter over-run but that is unacceptable to me. I am very finicky about my truck and I believe that in the long run that condition won't be good for my starter.



For the price of the MOPAR one may choose from the best of the other manufacturers. I always choose MOPAR parts as a first choice for my vehicle. My wife's truck has the DEI Valet and it is of superior performance to the MOPAR. Just my experience.



Perhaps I have a 'bad unit:" the dealer is willing to replace the module. I am their first diesel install of the MOPAR remote. However, that doesn't impress me either, to have a bad unit from the factory. I also did some searching on the internet and Code Alarm, who makes the MOPAR unit, is considered by professional installers to be a low-end manufacturer. Also, the range of the MOPAR is rather short for a modern unit. About 100-200 feet.



But heck, if you like it, that's great, that's really all that counts! :-laf
