Does anybody have one on there Ram? and if so, does it take in to account the delay for the heater grid?. I really want one for winter, i know its early, but i may as well start looking now, they will probably be cheaper now since they must not sell many in the summer. Is there a good brand? Any to avoid?

When I asked about it... ... they do make them with upto a 30second delay for operation of the Intake Heaters. So yes they work on diesels. In regards to the Brand, I don't have any info.

But just letting you know they are available.

EMD, I have one on my truck. My girlfriend gave it to me for XMAS. It has a hookup so it waits for the "wait to start" lamp to go out instead of a standard set delay. It's awesome because I can start it in the summer as well and it waits only about 2 seconds. It also has the keyless entry.

I got it from Tweeter. The hookup for diesel is about $50 more (I think).

I got a Valiant from JC Whitney on sale for $39 intending to use it for just the keyless entry but ended up hooking the whole thing up after seeing what it would do. It has function switches for diesels for a 30 second wait to start and longer crank time. I don't use the wait to start because I plug my truck in in the winter, the heaters have never come on even at minus 25°. It also has another remote function to pop the trunk, I hooked mine up to the horn, makes it easy to find your truck or just play with people. Only problem I've had with mine in four years is once when I forgot to plug in, it kept on tiring to start till the batteries were dead, I was too far away to hear it, range 300 ft. Also has anti theft devices so you can leave your truck running without the key, but it can't be driven. Expect at least 8 hours to install it yourself, mostly searching for wires under the dash, there are at least 25 connections to make, I soldered all, but that's my preference. They run about $80 when not on sale, and for all the features you get are an excellent deal, I don't see how they can do it so cheap. I highly recommend it.

EMD, I recently purchased a CrimeStopper RS900ER remote start/keyless entry system. I researched these pretty heavily and found this to be a pretty "diesel friendly" system that has provisions to integrate around existing keyless entry or alarm systems (my truck has both). It can sense the "Wait to Start" lamp and dwell until that circuit goes low, then start the truck. In summertime, the start is immediate. Run times are programmable from 12 to 48 minutes (long time) and it does have capability to act as a turbo cooldown control, however the cooldown time is same as run time and I think 12 min would be too long to let the truck idle?? It also has a "tachless" hookup option where it monitors voltage to detect when eng. has started. Personally, I prefer hard wiring into the tach. It will only make 3 attempts to start and then give up to prevent battery/starter damage. Regardless, it's a pretty flexible add on starter.

By the way, this is my first post. As far as I'm concerned, this website has been the most useful tool I have found on the internet (and most addictive). Thanks to all of you who lend information to the group.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, its going to be that or an Espar heater. I saw Hemi Darts and that thing is awesome. But VERY expenive (Unless you won it like he did)

For auto's only?

I notice all You guys have auto trans, I think these could be a real safety hazard on a manual. The shops I've talked to for grins 'n giggles won't consider an install on a manual.

I have a Command Start, it has many features;

Waits for the heaters to heat before starting,

Programmable to start when outside temp. reaches your choice temp.

Programmable run times,

Keep running while running errand with ign. key removed,

Etc, Etc.

Have used for two winters now and find it very good.

I have an Astrostrart on mine. If I can't plug in the truck it will automaticlly start at 0. Yes my truck is an auto. My father has one on his Nissan with a 5 speed. Because of safety reasons you have a list of things that need to be done to set it. With the door closed and the engine running, shift into neutral, set the E-brake, then shut off the engine. Then get out and shut the door, and it is ready to start by remote. Now if you need in the truck and open a door, the remote is canceled and you have to repeate the steps. It is a pain at first but once you do it a few times it becomes normal. I can't remember the brand name, was bought up in Alaska. The remote was really cool, it looked like a little pager and a LCD screen with a picture of a car. When a door was open it would show a door open on the screen. When the truck was running it shown smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe on the picture. Maybe some one knows the brand name, it is very popular up there. The only thing I should have had programed is the ability to operate the windows by remote. Just imagine seeing this big black 3500 4x4 with tinted windows, as you walk by the windows roll down, it starts playing "Bad to the Bone", and starts up with no one inside. Scare the c*%$ out of people.

I have a Sidewinder 6000ESP remote start, alarm system on my 1999 5spd. I had to bypass the clutch switch to remote_start the vehicle. I just make sure EVERY time I get out, i leave it in neutral and parking brake on,. never in gear...

I will be installing one before winter, my 94 had a remote starter and I am not looking forward to getting up at 3:00 am to go plow and get in a cold truck. Ah who am I fooling I'm not looking forward to getting up at 3:00 am period.

Anyway I am looking into the Directed Electronics "Viper".

If you get a quality starter and there are a few out there that are all on the same level, it all depends on who installs there are a Lot of Hackers out there... ... . so BEWARE

I had "Car Toy's" install the "Valet" on mine. I have had it about a year now and it works as advertised. I find it great for starting and cooling down the truck in warm weather. Warms it up in the winter as well. Just wish I could halve that 12 min. / run time. It cost me about $200. 00 installed.

I have a remote start on a 5 speed. Only way to get it "armed" is apply foot brake, press a button on the remote, remove the key from the ignition (truck is still running) get out of the truck, close both doors and shut it down by depressing another button on the remote- this locks the doors as well. If you open a door afterwards the aoutostart is cancelled. Pretty foolprof unless you climb out thru a window.

The unit I have is made for diesels(waits for grid heaters to cycle) and can be programmed to autostart every 1,2 or 3 hours and run for 5-15 minutes.
